Finding a goalkeeper for the future is something that Tottenham has been pursuing lately.

Before Tottenham lost Hugo Lloris to a hamstring injury, Mauricio Pochettino had been eyeing Pau López in early August.

With Michel Vorm as the experienced backup goalkeeper, López (should he join) would be the future starter on this team.

Because Lloris is hurt, it appears Spurs needed  a ‘keeper but that is far from the case. Pochettino trusts Vorm to do a good job.

And in two games, the Dutchman has deputized his French counterpart quite well in relief.

Though, despite looking good, Spurs are still showing interest in the Spanish Under-21 goalkeeper.

If López is added to this team, it’s obvious what this will do to the goalkeeper position.

Right now, nothing will happen because according to Sky Sports, Espanyol have rejected all of Tottenham’s offers.

But assuming that a deal is worked out in the end before the transfer window closes, what will happen?

If Spurs sign López, the 21-year-old ‘keeper could go straight to the youth academy or most likely the first team with Vorm being sold.

Selling Vorm must happen because Mauricio Pochettino only carries two goalkeepers on his 25-man squad when both are healthy.

If López joins on loan, he would play during cup competitions while Vorm (or Luke McGee) becomes his backup so that Hugo Lloris gets rest.

Essentially in both instances, Michel Vorm would be the odd-man out, to make way for a young and promising talent.

This is the only way that Pau Lopez’ arrival to North London works once both Espanyol and Spurs agree to a deal.

But losing Vorm who has plenty of experience is not an easy decision to make, especially if he has looked good in one-and-a-half games since replacing Lloris.

More from Tottenham Transfer Rumours

Pau López is the future if signed, but until something happens to Vorm (injury or loss of form) an agreement with the Catalan club won’t be reached any time soon.

And the last time Espanyol were considering Spurs’ latest offer, Federico Fazio was a player that they were targeting.

Now that Fazio joined AS Roma on a season-long loan this could explain while negotiations are at a stalement.

Money never seemed to be an issue as Tottenham’s initial offer was £3 million before Espanyol bumped it up to £5 million with Fazio coming back in return.

Because Federico Fazio has gone on loan to a different club, signing Pau López or even taking him on loan seems unlikely this summer.

Spurs don’t need goalkeeping help at the moment, even if Michel Vorm could get injured before Hugo Lloris returns.

But because Mauricio Pochettino sees Pau López as a future starter, Tottenham are in no rush to complete a deal.

Besides, there are more pressing matters to attend to, such as signing more players at winger and attacking midfield.
