Tottenham’s goalkeeper situation is already solid with Hugo Lloris the starter and Michel Vorm the backup. But if Pau López is a player that Mauricio Pochettino likes, then a deal could be possible.

Yesterday, there was a transfer rumor going around courtesy of Sport (via IBTimes), that had Tottenham showing some interest in Espanyol goalkeeper, Pau López, to become Hugo Lloris’ backup for the upcoming season.

According to the Spanish publication, Mauricio Pochettino’s former club wants €5 million (£4.2 million) plus Federico Fazio on loan with an option-to-buy clause inserted in, to secure the services of the 21-year-old shot stopper.

Before diving into the possibility of completing such a move, we must first look at Tottenham’s backup goalkeeper options first to see if signing López makes sense.

Currently, Hugo Lloris is the starting ‘keeper for Spurs and will easily start in both the Premier and Champions League this season. Where the Frenchman would get rest would be in the League and FA Cups.

With Michel Vorm the undisputed second-choice goalkeeper for Pochettino, even at the age of 32 he has proven his worth as a backup over the years in limited playing time. Sure, he makes some mistakes that costs Tottenham some goals, but overall, Vorm’s done a fine job.

Sitting behind the Dutch international and waiting in the wings would be a pair of academy graduates in Luke McGee and Tom Glover.

For two years now, they have been a part of the Argentine manager’s pre-season tours, one to the United States against the MLS All-Stars last summer and now traveling to Australia to face Juventus and Atlético Madrid last week.

One would think that either one of these ‘keepers, McGee and Glover, could eventually take over Michel Vorm’s role as Hugo Lloris’ backup but that time might not be now. In the future, sure.

So, back to Pau López of Espanyol.

More from Tottenham Transfer Rumours

If the La Liga side is serious in parting ways with him due to former Watford manager Quique Sánchez Flores signing Roberto Jiménez from Olympiacos, who is expected to be the starter for the new campaign after being coached by Flores during their time at Atlético Madrid, then Pau López by default would be on the way out.

And per Sport (which sounds promising but still remains to be seen), López has allegedly had formal talks with Tottenham officials to join Spurs this summer and become Lloris’ backup.

If Sport’s rumor is to be believed, then the 21-year-old ‘keeper really doesn’t mind being a backup to Hugo Lloris. Because for him, it will be a big step up both in wages and the club’s profile (due to competiting in the Champions League).

That, and he apparently prefers the Premier League than going to Serie A on loan.

Again, it’s hard to say if this deal will actually get through, but Tottenham doesn’t need a goalkeeper right now because it isn’t a priority.

Although if Mauricio Pochettino believes that getting a younger backup ‘keeper for Hugo Lloris, who could maybe one day be a future starter for Spurs if signed (which is a very easy deal), is better than having Michel Vorm then Pochettino should go through with this signing.
