Tottenham Hotspur still finds itself lagging behind the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal in the transfer market, despite the club’s progress in commercial ventures.

This assessment comes from journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke, who recently shared his insights on The Athletic FC Podcast.

While Spurs made a notable investment of around £125 million during the last transfer window, signing players such as Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, and Wilson Odobert, Pitt-Brooke points out that this spending does not match the financial firepower of their rivals.

Arsenal's hefty £100 million acquisition of Declan Rice and Chelsea's significant outlay on Moises Caicedo exemplify the stark contrast in transfer market activity.

Ange Postecoglou has had access to considerable funds since taking over as Spurs manager, with key additions like Brennan Johnson (£55 million), Micky van de Ven (£34 million), and James Maddison (£40 million).

However, even with these signings, Tottenham’s financial clout pales in comparison to that of the Manchester clubs, which continue to make high-profile purchases.

Pitt-Brooke notes that, despite the financial success stemming from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the club's various commercial initiatives, Tottenham remains unable to compete on the same level as their nearest rivals.

He highlights an internal belief that the club is “under-equitized,” meaning they lack the necessary financial resources compared to top competitors, even amidst their financial stability under Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

He stated, “There’s a big gap between what Tottenham can do and what their rivals can do. The club would like to be more aggressive in the transfer market, but they accept that they currently lack the capacity to compete financially with the top teams.”

Tottenham aims to outpace Arsenal, Man United in the race for key signing

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly leading the race to sign promising young English striker Liam Delap, competing with Arsenal and Manchester United.

Spurs have set their sights on the Ipswich Town forward as they aim to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the January transfer window.

Delap, valued at approximately €40 million, has impressed with his performances at Ipswich, attracting attention from several top clubs.

Despite the recent signing of Dominic Solanke, Tottenham recognises the need for additional scoring options, especially given Richarlison’s injury concerns and the inconsistent form of players like Timo Werner.

With a strong reputation for developing young talent, Spurs could provide Delap with the ideal environment to flourish. As Arsenal and Manchester United also monitor the situation, Tottenham must act decisively to make Delap a key part of their future plans.
