Is Omar Marmoush worth £60m? Tottenham transfer compared to similarly priced players

Tottenham's summer spending spree continues. On Tuesday, Spurs unveiled the signing of the recently rebranded Sávio, arriving from Manchester City for £85 million. Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi labelled the Brazilian international "one of the best in the world", and the Lilywhites are now on the verge of a double deal with the Sky Blues.

As has been widely reported on Wednesday, Omar Marmoush is also set to become a Tottenham player. The Egyptian will initially join on loan, with an obligation to buy for £60 million next summer. Having also spent big to recruit Jan Paul van Hecke, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, this takes Spurs' total summer spend up to £382 million, so far having recouped around £147 million.

In the current transfer market, partially of Spurs' own doing, it is impossible to know what is value for money. This is especially the case when one Premier League club sells to another. Nevertheless, when compared to other centre-forwards who've moved in the last 12 months or so, does £60 million for Marmoush feel like a fair price?

Some of those transfer fees are absolutely extortionate; looking at you Jørgen Stand Larsen and Liam Delap in particular. The base fee for an elite striker with any semblance of high-level expirence appears to be £50 million so, in that context, Marmoush for £60 million feels like a bargain.

He will soon become the third Egyptian to play for Spurs, after Mido and Hossam Ghaly, but will he be a success in N17?

Why Omar Marmoush can be a success at Tottenham

Despite not showcasing the full extent of his capabilities since joining Manchester City, it is clear that Marmoush remains a fantastic striker. He has scored just 16 goals in 62 outings for the Sky Blues, netting only eight times in all competitions last season. However he did win Premier League goal of the season in 2024/25 for this outrageous long-range striker against Bournemouth at the Etihad.

The 27 year old has had an unusual route to the top. He bounced around various German clubs, namely VfL Wolfsburg, St. Pauli and VfB Stuttgart without ever doing very much, so much so that die Weißgrünen released him in the summer of 2023. Well, a subsequent move to Eintracht Frankfurt would change everything.

Marmoush scored 37 goals in 67 outings for die Adler, averaging a goal every 140 minutes. In 2024/25, despite joining Manchester City in January, his tally of 15 Bundesliga goals, coming in just 17 appearances, was only bettered by five men, all of whom were in the league the entire season.

At the time of his departure from Deutsche Bank Park, Marmoush was viewed as one of the very best centre-forwards on the planet. So now, Spurs will certainly be hoping he can hit those heights again in North London.

Considering how lacklustre Richarlison was at Brentford on Saturday, and that Dominic Solanke cannot be relied upon to stay fit, the Egyptian should transform De Zerbi's forward line.
