Ghanaian national team star Mohammed Kudus won't be playing in the AFCON qualifiers during this September international break, as Tottenham Hotspur fans recently learned that the right winger will be taking a break from football, as he should, and focusing 100 percent on being fully fit for Spurs.
Kudus has been able to play significant mintues in recent weeks, but he has not been able to stay in the starting lineup or show full fitness. He is coming off a season ending injury last spring that was slow to heal and did not start the 2026/27 season fit, surprisingly unable to get minutes during the preseason either.
Before his injury, Kudus was the best and most important player on Tottenham in just his first season last year, to the point where Thomas Frank basically ran the forward into the ground. His entire gameplan consisted of getting the ball to Kudus, having him dribble past as many people as possible, and then hoping it all worked out. Clearly, that was not a winning formula, but Kudus was so important that once he got injured, the Lilywhites sunk towards the relegation zone.
Ghana and Mohammed Kudus had a discussion
If any Tottenham Hotspur fans were nervous about how Ghana would feel about Mohammed Kudus leaving the national team at an important time for the AFCON qualifiers when they have been underperforming overall this past year, then they won't have to worry after hearing words from the iconic manager Carlos Queiroz.
He said that he and Kudus are on the same page and the decision to hold the winger out of the September international break was a mutual one. Quieroz affirmed that Ghana and Tottenham have the same goal; they want Kudus to be totally fit.
Queiroz said, via Chris Cowlin, "We are not coaches of the clubs, we can't control their decisions. It looked like Kudus was moving in the right direction. But later, after playing 70-something minutes, the news was not progressing as expected. In my final conversation with Kudus, we realised the best decision was to protect his recovery process. He can take the risk of a step-back, and nobody wants that."
Tottenham fans will be pleased to hear that Ghana and Carlos Queiroz are taking Kudus's health seriously and do not want to risk his situation. Though Spurs signed Omar Marmoush and Savio from Manchester City this summer, the former West Ham United man is still a vital player to Spurs and someone they need to make sure is fully fit going forward as they search for their first win of the campaign.
