Tottenham Hotspur right winger Mohammed Kudus was probably the team's best player last season when he was healthy, and it is telling that when he suffered a soft tissue injury that ended his final months of the campaign, Spurs fell far into the relegation abyss and would have went down to the EFL Championship if Roberto De Zerbi did not save the club's future.
Kudus was the one true creative threat and the focal point of Thomas Frank's "plan", and the Ghanaian international deserves a lot of credit for his skill on the ball and tireless efforts in taking defenders on. But even in a strong debut season for Tottenham, Kudus was not much of a threat in the final third, scoring just 2 goals with 5 assists in 19 starts.
To start the 2026/27 Premier League season, Kudus has been slowly working his way to full fitness in his early days of actually getting to finally work with Roberto De Zerbi. He has now played 78 minutes in three bench appearances for De Zerbi in the Premier League and 75 minutes in his first start of the campaign in Spurs 3-1 loss to Liverpool in the Third Round of the League Cup.
Mohammed Kudus has been disappointing
And while he is still trying to get his feet wet in a new system with new players around him and a new manager as he works his way to 100 percent fitness, Kudus has been pretty disappointing in terms of his actual output.
While he has had some nice dribbles on the ball in the League Cup and Premier League, he has not been as exciting or dynamic as last season. To be fair, that is normal, since, again, he is just coming back from a big injury, but it is the other numbers that are troubling.
Of course, with Tottenham Hotspur struggling as a team and Mohammed Kudus not logging many minutes, he has not scored or assisted in about 160 total minutes between competitions yet. But it is disappointing that he has just one key pass thus far, and he has missed a few clear cut chances already.
Tottenham need Kudus not only to step up more as a scorer, which has always been a big issue for him despite being an inverted winger, but they also need him to be more of a creator, especially since Roberto De Zerbi has said he is a possible option at the 10. Kudus is playing way too slow on the ball with his decision making, and his efficiency in the final third is lacking.
Tottenham need Kudus to stop slowing the play down and to be a lot more decisive in Year 2. West Ham fans noticed this problem with Kudus during his time with the Hammers, and after spending so much to sign him from their rivals, Spurs need Kudus to snap out of this.
