This week Tottenham face off against Manchester United at a very opportune moment.

Manchester United are in a bad way at the moment and it’s nothing but helpful to Tottenham.  In terms of a useful time to play against a member of the big six, this could not be a better time for Spurs to go about handling business against the Red Devils.

Where United are in an oddly weak position is in defense.  For Jose Mourinho, this is the first time in his entire career that his defence has been as porous and weak as it is at the moment.  Eric Bailly looks entirely bereft of confidence and Victor Lindelof though improving his standard since last season is still very much so at the base of the mountain.  After that Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are non-factors against Spurs.

Then Sanchez and Lukaku in the attacking third are still not clicking any better than they were six months ago.  Antony Martial has never looked less comfortable in red and it just seems to all be going wrong for United at the moment.  Tottenham who are coming from a position of strength could not be more sound coming into this matchup.

More from Match Reports

This is a wonderful situation for Tottenham.  With Harry Kane already off the mark and Dele Alli on his way to midseason form there’s a good chance that Tottenham pile the pressure on the Red Devils early this season.

Generally speaking, these two clubs could not be in different positions.  Manchester United are trying to bed in new signings and have an amount of inner turmoil that only a Jose Mourino side can have.  Between the board, the agents, the manager and the star players all being on different pages it’s not good in Manchester at the moment.

The most interesting thing about it then is that juxtaposed to Tottenham who are coming into the meeting with a remarkable level of consistency and continuity this matchup couldn’t be any more different.

This is a good matchup for Spurs and come Tuesday morning it will likely look very good for Tottenham.
