Tottenham responded to Thursday’s Europa League exit with a big win over Stoke in the Premier League yesterday. A performance that pleased Mauricio Pochettino.

One way to get over a disappointing result such as a 3-2 aggregate loss to Gent in the Europa League, which knocked Tottenham out of Europe, is to record a win in the next match.

Scoring four goals by half-time against Stoke isn’t what many people would have expected, but it was great to see nonetheless.

It was a performance that Mauricio Pochettino claimed as fantastic — like he always says following a win for his side. But more so for how Spurs responded to adversity.

Not just after another European exit, but to also put the breaks on any preconceived notions of a free fall in the Premier League after dismal performances since a 4-0 win over West Brom on January 14th.

"“The performance was fantastic, I’m very pleased with the effort after Thursday,” Pochettino said. “We were all disappointed after Wembley and this was a big, big response.”“It’s for that reason we all feel very proud.”“We played very well. The first half was fantastic, the second half we controlled and managed the game and created some more.”“The three points were important for us to keep our position in the table.”"

For the time being, Spurs picking up a win over the weekend sees the north London club sitting in second place once again behind league leaders Chelsea, who are still ahead by 10 points with 12 matches remaining.

Because Spurs are going to be playing mostly at home to close out the rest of the season, these are points that they cannot drop.

Especially after going unbeaten in 13 home fixtures this season with 11 wins and two draws and scoring 30 goals while conceding just five times at White Hart Lane.

More from Match Reports

A part of the reason why Tottenham came out of the gates flying against Stoke, other than the obvious reason in wanting to win following their Europa League exit, is because Mauricio Pochettino challenged his players

Inadvertently that is. Not necessarily calling his players out after last Thursday’s performance. Seeing as how the Argentine manager was pleased with their effort to keep fighting.

Speaking to reporters before Sunday’s match, Pochettino said that Spurs can’t feel sorry for themselves. That they had “no time to cry” after last Thursday’s result.

In a way, it was supposed to illicit a response where Spurs would take a bad result and use it as fuel to get back to winning ways.

To rout Stoke 4-0 for the third consecutive time and twice this season showed that Mauricio Pochettino’s players took his words to heart and went out there yesterday to put in one of their better performances this season.

"“The competition doesn’t wait for you and it’s important to keep going, to be clever in how we assess every situation and think ahead – now to the Premier League and the FA Cup.”"

Games like the one that Spurs have showed in recent spurts this season is just a microcosm of what Tottenham are capable of if they play like they did to Manchester City (2-0 win), Chelsea (2-0 win), West Brom (4-0 win), Fulham (3-0) and Stoke (4-0 wins).

It’s not surprising that the teams mentioned above that Spurs beat this season share a common denominator among each other — Tottenham attacked them relentlessly and didn’t ease up. They went for the kill and got rewarded with wins and clean sheets.
