Hugo Lloris, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli all reflected on Tottenham’s win yesterday at St. Mary’s Stadium, beating Southampton 4-1.

With December wrapping up in a couple of days, three Tottenham players that make up a portion of the team’s spine spoke with Spurs TV following a well-deserved 4-1 win yesterday evening.

The general consensus among Hugo Lloris, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli was that Southampton proved to be a tough opponent for the opening 15 minutes.

But afterwards, Spurs were able to grow into the game and turn things around with the Saints unable to muster much offensively after securing an early 1-0 lead.

“We know it’s a tough place to come and a tough place to deal with and for sure, they will get points against the top teams in this league.” Hugo Lloris explained (via Spurs’ official website).

“The way the game turned for us was fantastic because we rose our levels all together. We could have made the difference earlier in the game but at the end it’s a great result with four goals for the goal difference as well”

“That’s important too – [goal difference] you never know what will happen. It was a great performance and a great result.”

Dele Alli who scored the equalizer laid down the team’s mentality of sticking to their gameplan even after trailing 69 seconds into the match. Alli was convinced Tottenham would get their chances, and when they did, they converted a majority of them.

“I got a few headed goals at MK Dons and it’s nice to get another for Tottenham,” Alli said about his headed effort to level the game one-all.

“The start was disappointing with them getting a goal so early but it was important we stuck to the plan and we knew if we did that, the chances would come.”

“We showed we’ve got great character and we’ll look to progress from here.”

More from Match Reports

Having the character and perseverance to come back into the game, draw level and then score three more goals to runaway as winners in comfortable fashion is a great sign to see.

Spurs have shown that they can match-up against any team this season. While they drew 1-1 against Arsenal and lost to Chelsea and Manchester United, 2-1 and 1-0 respectively, those scorelines show a side that is tough to breakdown defensively.

Tottenham do own the second-best defense in the Premier League after all, and with that, they make it very difficult for opponents to have their way.

It will be a struggle and should Spurs manage to create any chances, they will be able to get back into the game if they’re trailing or break open a stalemate.

Being able to come from behind and win in emphatic fashion sums up this team’s character like Dele Alli was talking about. Of course that doesn’t excuse how Spurs played poorly to begin the match. Playing unlike a Mauricio Pochettino-coached team.

Still, when Spurs created chances they finished them off.

“We had to come back on track after the start, we know we are better than that.” Eriksen said.

“We started so poorly, they scored after one-and-a-half minutes and it needed some extra work to come back but we had a little bit of luck with all the deflections and at the end of the day, we did well.”

“It was very good,” Christian Eriksen continued, speaking about the team’s performance from the attacking midfielders.

“Of course Moussa [Sissoko] is new, Dele and me know each other from last season so there’s nothing surprising but everyone really in midfield did well – the holding midfielders forcing the ball into our feet and making it easier for us, Harry making the runs which makes it even easier, so it’s all the small stuff which is really going in the right direction.”

Next: Did Tottenham Win or Did Southampton Lose?

Tottenham could have done without trailing in the second minute to get their offense going much faster than they would have wanted. But it worked out in the end.

Spurs bossed the Saints around and continued to possess the ball in Southampton’s own half making it difficult for Claude Puel’s side to do much of anything.

It’s just another win that sees Mauricio Pochettino’s players put on a good performance in the month of December.
