Tottenham’s top two goalscorers this season helped Spurs get a win over West Ham United in an epic comeback to remain in contention for a top four spot.

During the month of September, Son Heung-Min was Tottenham’s best player, scoring four league goals and tallying one assist. He would be awarded the Premier League Player of the Month award for his brilliant displays.

Harry Kane on the other hand would pick up where he left off last season as the Golden Boot winner by scoring two goals in five games. The pair looked like they would be an unstoppable force together in the starting XI before injuries struck the two of them.

Against Sunderland, Kane would suffer ankle ligament damage and be sidelined for seven weeks. It’s the first time he has suffered a serious injury since the 2013-14 campaign when a back injury kept him out for a little over a month.

Son who had lost a step didn’t disclose a nagging ankle injury of his own. While he soldiered on, he was ineffective during Spurs’ winless streak from mid-October until yesterday’s match as a late second half substitute.

Both players played a vital role in combining together for Tottenham’s deciding victory at White Hart Lane over West Ham United.

With 22 minutes left in the match and trailing 2-1, Son would send in a low cross that West Ham ‘keeper Darren Randolph did his best to stop but it was in vain. He would redirect the ball’s trajectory right to Kane’s feet where he tapped home the equalizer in the 89th minute.

That was enough for a draw, a well deserved result for many, but with six minutes of stoppage time added, the pair of forwards hooked up once again.

This time, Son would be brought down in the box after a deft touch to shield the ball from Havard Nordtveit before being taken down in the box in the 90th minute.

A minute later, Harry Kane smashed the ball into the back of the net from the penalty spot. Three to two, your final, as Spurs come from behind to spoil West Ham’s win.

After the match, Harry Kane talked about the impact that Son Heung-Min made on Spurs’ official website.

“We’ve got a great squad this season and it’s important for the players who start on the bench to be ready to come on because, like today, Sonny and Dele [Alli] changed the game. That’s what they have to be ready for. Everyone wants to start but sometimes you have to make an impact off the bench like Sonny did.”

Son himself reflected on what he had just done when he came onto the pitch.

“I want to say this for my teammates – they worked really hard,” the South Korean said. “When I came on it was difficult to get into the game, my pass was not great but Harry’s finish for 2-2 was very good.”

“I’m also very happy that we got three points because everyone was really disappointed in the last four weeks where we didn’t win and we dropped some points, but everyone did fantastic today. It’s exciting to get three points at home like this and I’m really happy to help my teammates.”

Spurs fought hard for this win, though it wasn’t a great performance by the hosts which Harry Kane would explain. Still, even if West Ham made it difficult, Tottenham dug deep to find a way to win when it mattered the most.

“I was disappointed because I didn’t think we played great,” Kane explained.

“West Ham made it difficult for us, they shut off the middle of the pitch and we had to be patient. We did well to get back to 1-1 and all the momentum was with us. I thought we were going on to win it but they got the penalty, we were 2-1 down and we had to take a deep breath and go again.”

“We left it late. It wasn’t the greatest performance from us but that’s what it’s about – you have to dig deep as a team, stay patient and eventually we got the two goals.”
