Tottenham: Lloris, Wanyama Disappointed But Are Looking Forward
Wednesday night’s loss at Wembley Stadium stretched Tottenham’s winless streak to six games since October 15, when Spurs returned from the international break.
Many factors have played a part in Spurs’ current downward trend — outside of the Premier League — and it starts up front with a lack of stability. As Hotspur HQ’s Ryan Wrenn wrote earlier today, Mauricio Pochettino has been without his starting attacking players for 14 of the 16 matches this season in all competitions.
Because of this, it has made it difficult for Spurs to not only score but also present any sort of threat up front.
With no Harry Kane, Érik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli being available or recapturing their form from last year, it’s easy for teams to sit back and defend. Then, go forward and put pressure on Tottenham’s defense.
This is why Hugo Lloris spoke about Spurs’ efforts to do something, anything, but not being able to have things go their way. Last season, Pochettino’s offense was able to score goals. It helped to have a healthy team no doubt, but everything just seemed to click.
Now, just one year removed from a third place finish in the Premier League and it appears that the law of averages have caught up to Spurs.
“It’s the kind of night where you can try anything and it’s going bad, everything we worked on, everything we tried, things didn’t go our way,” Lloris said (via Spurs’ official website).

“We need to learn because we now only have two chances to go through. We worked a lot last season to get into the Champions League and we cannot waste everything.”
“It’s a shame because we’ve lost six points at home and that’s difficult at this level. We need to look forward because it’s a big game for us on Sunday. We need to question ourselves, recover and be ready for Arsenal.”
While it’s obvious what the problem is for Spurs, just simply waiting for Harry Kane and Érik Lamela to return and for Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli to recapture their form won’t be enough.
As the Frenchman put it, it’s more than just one or two players. This is a whole team effort and even though Kane won the Golden Boot award last term, his success was a combination of his own effort and Spurs providing him plenty of service.
“I always said we don’t depend on one or two players, we are a team and we need to be a unit,” Hugo Lloris added. “It’s true, maybe we’ve lost some confidence because it’s a few games now that we haven’t won but we are still working, we need to keep our chins up and be ready for Sunday.”
A lack of confidence is something that Hugo Lloris and Victor Wanyama see differently, but what they both agree on is things are not working in their favor. The only thing Spurs can do, in all honesty, is to continue moving forward.
Continue doing all the things they have been doing and just hope the goals come. The chances they’ve created shows Spurs are able to put pressure on opposing team’s defenses. They just need some luck is all.

“No, I don’t think it’s a lack of confidence, it’s just that things are not working well and we have to stay together,” Wanyama said.
“We know we’re in a bad moment, we have to stick together and it will come. Everyone is disappointed, we know we can do much better than this. We have tough games to come so we have to continue fighting.”
“Sure, it’s very disappointing losing at home. We have great support so it’s very disappointing but there is nothing we can do now, it’s happened and we have to look ahead and try to be better.”
