Tottenham have already been busy this summer, bolstering their defensive options with World Cup stars. On Thursday, the club confirmed the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for a whopping fee of £52 million, making him one of the most expensive additions in the club's history.
Meantime, they have also recruited Andy Robertson on a free from Liverpool, the 32 year old adding some much needed expirence to Spurs' back-line. Before he arrives in North London, the left-back is currently in Massachusetts as part of Scotland's squad at the World Cup, so will Spurs fans be able to see him in action against Morocco on Friday night?
Is Andy Robertson expected to play for Scotland tonight?
Put succinctly, yes. As long as Scotland remain in the World Cup, barring injury or suspension, Robertson will be starting matches at this tournament, given that he is Steve Clarke's captain. The left-back has now won 73 caps while donning the armband, by far the most of any player in Scotland's history, smashing George Young's previous record of 48 set in 1957.
He has featured in every international since suffering a shoulder injury in the autumn of 2023, meaning Friday night against Morocco will be the 29th successive Scotland fixture in which he has appeared. Considering how derailed Tottenham have been across the last two seasons by injuries, this sort of reliability is surely one of the reasons why Robertson was brought to N17.
Scotland's left-back depth chart at the World Cup
For many years, the primary debate around Scotland was how to get Robertson and Kieran Tierney into the same lineup. Predecessor Gordon Strachan switched Tierney to right-back, but the first thing Clarke did was change to a back five, thereby deploying Tierney as the left-sided centre-back with Robertson outside him.
Players | Club | Caps |
|---|---|---|
Andy Robertson | Tottenham Hotspur | 95 |
Kieran Tierney | Celtic | 56 |
However, the Dark Blues have rather evolved beyond needing the back five system, given how strong they are in midfield. Thus, the former Arsenal defender was an unused substitute in Foxborough against Haiti, once again set to begin the night on the bench.
The all-time Scotland record Andy Robertson is chasing
As noted, Robertson now has 95 caps to his name, closing in on the all-time national record.
Players | Date of most recent cap | Total Scotland caps |
|---|---|---|
Kenny Dalglish | 1977 | 102 |
Andy Robertson | 2026 | 95 |
Jim Leighton | 1998 | 91 |
John McGinn | 2026 | 86 |
Craig Gordon | 2026 | 84 |
Darren Fletcher | 2017 | 80 |
Robertson requires just seven more caps to surpass Kenny Dalglish's all-time record that has stood for almost half a century. Even if Scotland got all the way to the semi-finals, which they won't, he cannot break the record during the World Cup, so expect Robertson to continue playing for his country beyond the summer, especially with Hampden a host venue for the Euros in two years time.
Scotland team news vs Morocco
Despite victory over Haiti, expect Clarke to make at least one change to his lineup. He deployed Ché Adams and Lawrence Shankland as a strike partnership for that game, but will bring in an extra midfield player for this significantly tougher test. This is likely to be Bournemouth's Ryan Christie, or it could be Kenny McLean of Norwich, given that Billy Gilmour is sidelined due to injury. This aside, no changes are forecast.
Scotland predicted lineup vs Morocco
- Angus Gunn
- Aaron Hickey, Grant Hanley, Jack Hendry & Andy Robertson
- Ryan Christie, Scott McTominay & Lewis Ferguson
- Ben Gannon-Doak & John McGinn
- Ché Adams.
