There is still no real clarity on the future of Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall. The young Swedish international submitted his walking papers to Spurs during the 2026 World Cup, asking for a permanent transfer away from N17 in order to get the regular starting minutes as a No. 8 that no manager on Spurs could provide him last season.
Thomas Frank was the biggest offender in that regard, wasting away both Bergvall and other talents as the young core of Tottenham's future stagnated badly under the Danish manager, who came so close to getting Spurs relegated. Things got better at the end of the season under Roberto De Zerbi, who spared the club's relegation battles, but for Bergvall, personally, he didn't get much out of the De Zerbi reign.
With Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali joining Tottenham as immediate midfield starters, Bergvall's future at Spurs is looking murkier, as these two 185 million pound combined investments are going to be starters for Spurs for at least the next five years.
Lucas Bergall may not be the right fit for Roberto De Zerbi after all
Tottenham Hotspur and Roberto De Zerbi are still trying to convince the young Lucas Bergvall to stay, advising him on his importance to the future, as well as the importance of having key rotational midfielders in the presence, judging by how badly Spurs were hurt by crucail injureis over the last several seasons.
The thing is, though, De Zerbi is not exactly begging for Bergvall to stay either. He has made it clear that he is perfectly happy if Bergvall were to decide to leave and that he would not hold the Swedish international in North London against his will.
That's because De Zerbi sees that Bergvall is not a perfect fit for what he wants. He does not read the game at a high level, his intangibles are well below that of future captain and Tottenham midfield peer Archie Gray, and he is making more headlines through his agent than for his play on the field, barely doing the minimum to get by.
Also, De Zerbi really, really likes players such as Gray who have a lot of technical quality, kindness, leadership, and vision. Bergvall is a great athlete everyone has to respect, but he has been exposed recently for not having the right attention to detail. De Zerbi is not going to cry over losing Bergvall, because he knows that Bergvall is not really a top class player and lacks the soft skills needed to reach the elite cusp he was advertised as during his time as a prospect.
