Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall is only 20 years old and one of the most talented players at the club, but he has frusrated a lot of fans this summer by throwing in the towel without even trying to fight.
Even before Tottenham officially brought in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes as a combined and much needed 185 million pound overhaul of the starting midfield base, Bergvall submitted a transfer request to Spurs, believing he saw the writing on the wall and would not be able to get minutes next season.
Behind the scenes, Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs have been trying to convince Bergvall that he is still important and will get minutes in the team, but, thus far, they have been unsuccessful. The Swedish national team midfielder has been linked constantly with a move out, and Nottingham Forest badly want him while Newcastle United and Aston Villa have also been mentioned.
Lucas Bergvall's future is up to him
Now, in the offseason, De Zerbi has made his stance on Lucas Bergvall totally clear to Tottenham Hotspur supporters. While he wants Bergvall on the team, he is not going to keep him against his will.
De Zerbi said, via Hotspur Lane, “I have not spoken with Lucas yet, I will in the next days. And we will make the best decision for the club, for Lucas, for me, for every one of us. Without problems, Lucas is a big, big talent. There will be a big competition to play because at the end I think we will be two players for each position. If he wants to stay, I will be happy. Otherwise, we have to find a new solution.”
Everything De Zerbi said about Bergvall here will ring 100 percent true for Tottenham fans. Bergvall is an excellent talent who could be one of the best, but he finds himself in a situation at Tottenham where suddenly there is the actual level of quality that should exist at a Big Six club. And now, all of a sudden, Bergvall has to fight for his place and compete.
But because the standards are so high, as De Zerbi says, Spurs need depth - and the sort of quality depth they did not have for years. So Bergvall will play since there will be two in each position. It is simple. If Bergvall understands that and is willing to stay and play and prove himself as, say, Mateus Fernandes's No. 2, then great. If not, so be it and good riddance. It's not like he did jack for Sweden at this World Cup anyway.
