Tottenham Hotspur fans have been loving the changes made at the club this summer transfer window with notable signings Andy Robertson, Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali all coming in to give Spurs more quality, depth, and experience as they look to get back to the top of the Premier League table after two seasons in the bottom five.
In particular, the Fernandes and Tonali signings are massive wins, as they represent serious investments and the signing of two of the best players on the market in their positions. But not everyone was happy with the moves, as Lucas Bergvall frustrated Spurs fans, just as Luka Vuskovic did when begging for a transfer after the Van Hecke signing, by submitting a formal transfer request when the rumors of those two blockbuster moves started to become serious.
Bergvall is a big gem for Tottenham and can develop into one of the best midfielders in the world, but he has been poor over the past year, dealing with injuries or not asserting himself on the pitch or taking advantage of his opportunities - and he was dreadful for Sweden at the World Cup this year.
Roberto De Zerbi has no time for selfishness
Roberto De Zerbi sent Bergvall a pointed message without saying his name, plainly telling reporters that if a playe does not want to be at Tottenham Hotspur, then they should leave because he does not want them either.
The former Brighton manager stated, via Hotspur Lane, “I was very clear at the start of my time in Tottenham. I said, 'Who doesn't want to stay in Tottenham, who is not happy, is not proud to stay here, has to leave! I want proud players who are happy to stay here and to go on the pitch at Tottenham Stadium with a big motivation.”
Tottenham Hotspur fans will clap wholeheartedly at this statement from their coach, because Roberto De Zerbi is one thousand percent correct here. If Tottenham are to have ambitions of winning the Premier League, then they need their players to be unselfish and buy into the team, willing to help out and win instead of being complainers focused only on their own careers and ego.
Lucas Bergvall is already starting to come off as that kind of a player. Luka Vuskovic was the same way, and Spurs said good riddance to him. Bergvall is a step away from that now, too.
