Tottenham Hotspur star center back Cristian Romero was supposed to fetch a big fee for the club on the summer transfer market this year coming off the heels of a strong World Cup campaign, but Spurs are only going to get 40 million euros out of him after Inter Milan seemingly pulled out of the race due to cost. Only Atletico Madrid, the club that went in for Romero last year, are still interested, as the other La Liga giants he was hoping for, Barcelona, have made it clear they are not at all interested in the central defender.
Word travels fast in football, and club teams are increasingly less impressed with performances in World Cups and other international tournaments because of how low the standard of play is. Clubs want to pay for players who are excelling at other top clubs, and that does not describe how Cuti Romero has been playing over the last year.
Romero was a disgrace for Spurs last season, and while fans did not want to believe that the Europa League Player of the Tournament could be the same player who threw in the towel on the team during the worst of the relegation battle, Romero is indeed arguably the worst captain in the history of the club. And after spending all of last summer twerking for Atletico and Barca before undeservingly picking up the captaincy from club legnd Son Heung-min, it's more than fair to wonder if he should have been named captain at all.
Cristian Romero has lost his reputation
Tottenham Hotspur supporters have felt for months that Cristian Romero was overvalued, including by themselves in the past, and soured on him greatly after he tried to abandon the team in the Matchday 38 decider against Everton that would either confirm or deny their Premier League futures.
Romero showed no effort when Spurs needed him the most, and he played very poorly in the second half of the season, contributing greatly to Spurs being in the relegation fight in the first place. That seemed to be a big secret to mainstream punditry, but it looks like teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid, who did not want to touch this man with a ten foot pole, have caught on to the secret quickly.
Even Arsenal's name were used, and while Mikel Arteta was interested - and Spurs were not - it doesn't really seem like the organization were truly interested in Romero as a whole either. His reputation has taken a huge hit, and he has become known as a player who pads analytics but is more out for himself than the team - and most elite clubs don't want that.
