Tottenham Hotspur are undoubtedly going to be selling center back Cristian Romero this summer transfer window, as he performed poorly as a captain and had an overall disappointing season. Roberto De Zerbi has done nothing to convince Romero to stay despite the player being a theoretically perfect fit for his tactics, as the Italian manager was visibly upset by the player trying to back out of being around his teammates for the final Matchday of the season against Everton with Premier League survival on the line.

Romero should have no shortage of suitors this summer transfer window, as Atletico Madrid and Barcelona continue to be linked with a player who already expressed out loud last summer transfer window that he dreams of a big move to one of La Liga's powerhouse clubs.

He has only increased his transfer value this summer with a strong World Cup for Argentina, as the 2022 champion has scored crucial goals and played great defense, looking particularly savvy on the ball, just as he usually does for Spurs.

Cristian Romero is prone to errors

But Cristian Romero is not a perfect player and can be very vulnerable defensively due to his aggression. Tottenham Hotspur fans are well aware of his flaws, and they will be pleasantly surprisd by Gary Neville's analysis of Romero and his Argentina center back partner Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United fame.

Neville succinctly said of the duo on the ITV Football broadcast, via AllThings_THFC, “Honestly, you watch [Cristian] Romero and [Lisandro] Martinez and they’re the best worst centre halves in the world. They give goals away constantly, but they don’t care about giving goals away because then they’ll score goals at the other end, and they have massive personalities and they keep going. They don’t give in and they fight, and they fight, and they fight.”

That's a really nice way of putting it. Romero does have a huge personality and can contribute a lot going forward, and while, frustratingly, he seemed to lack that fight for Spurs in the relegation battle when they needed him the most, he does usually bring a certain fire about him with his playing style.

But, as Gary Neville notes, he is going to give up goals and not perform his basic duties of a center back because of that. And between Lisandro Martinez and Cuti, the latter is far more egregious in the mistakes he makes, which frustrates Spurs fans. That is a reminder that while he is standing out at the World Cup, there is a reason why Tottenham are OK with him leaving.
