The blood between Tottenham Hotspur and Cristian Romero has been worse than anticipated. Romero is headed out the door despite being the club's captain last season, and many fans feel it was no coincidence that Spurs almost got relegated in their worst ever season with Romero as captain. In large part, he received the captaincy not because of his leadership, but because he was the biggest name and needed something to appease him into staying after the captaincy was left vacant by club legend Son Heung-min.
When Spurs needed him most as the team slid further into the abyss in the second half of the season, Romero was nowhere to be found, and he seemed to want to abscond away from the team in their very hour of need, requesting to go back to Argentina on Matchday 38 instead of supporting his teammates in a decisive match.
This summer, offloading Romero for a strong transfer fee has been downright impossible, and Romero has been the crux of the issue with his wage demands. Plus, big clubs who can afford his wages are smart enough to know that a player who was this disappointing and this poor of a captain as a team faced relegation is maybe not the right fit for them.
Cristian Romero is flirting with Arsenal
But Arsenal have emerged alongside favorites Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan as a landing spot for him. There is nothing MIkel Arteta loves more than a bitter man scorned, and he wants to turn Cristian Romero into the ultimate villain in the North London Derby, which the Gunners already dominated last season - no thanks to Romero in defense.
There is a lot of smoke linking the Argentina star to the Emirates, and many outlets are reporting that Romero has spoken with Arteta and is sold on the move, with the only thing keeping him away from agreeing to an Arsenal transfer already is the fact that Tottenham Hotspur obviously do not want to sell to their biggest rivals.
Romero agreeing to join Arsena would be an insane betrayal almost on the level of Sol Campbell, save for the fact that Romero is not as good as Campbell was, but him even entertaining the thought is absurd and disgraceful enough. It is so disrespectful for the captain of Tottenham to be considering Arsenal in the slightest, especially since he spent at least a year twerking for top La Liga clubs - and come to find out, two of the Big Three don't want him and Atleti don't seem to be as into him as he thought. Any bit of legacy Romero had at Tottenham has been tarnished in the span of just six months.
