Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero is widely revered as one of the top center backs in world football, and he has a World Cup, Copa America, and Europa League title to his resume. Although he was unable to add to his silverware this summer at the World Cup, he did pick up literal silver and played an amazing tournament in central defense up until his injury in the World Cup Final against Spain, which Argentina went on to lose 1-0 in extra time to Ferran Torres and Co.
Spurs fans had thought that Romero's big tournament would drum up interest in his transfer and bring them a bigger fee than the lowball offers Atletico Madrid were submitting to them last summer, but, now, that looks like a pipe dream with how surprisingly little is coming Spurs way for Romero this year.
Perhaps other clubs are skeptical. Romero wants to move to Barcelona or Atletico Madrid in La Liga, and reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan are the third club with the wages to acquire Romero and the cachet that may interest him. But after watching Romero disgrace Tottenham as captain and nearly run them into relegation while Spurs survived without him, the offers are sparse.
Cuti is not making it easier for Spurs
According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, via the Spurs Zone, Inter Milan, after signing Manchester City veteran and England international John Stones for free, are considering withdrawing from the Cuti transfer race because of his wage demands.
Meanwhile, Moretto also has bad news on the Atleti and Barca tracks. He states that while the two La Liga giants are still interested in Romero and that the Argentinian star center back is prioritizing them, the Blaugrana do not see him as a priority this transfer window. Meanwhile, Atleti, the apparent fail safe for Cristian Romero and Tottenham Hotspur, are also not as interested as everyone thought. Moretto reveals that a deal is difficult for the Rojiblancos, also for his salary demands, as in the Inter case, and because, like Barcelona, Atleti must sell before buying him.
In short, for three reasons and for all three of the major players in the Romero transfer battle, it is not looking good at all for Tottenham. They cannot be stuck with Romero and are guaranteed to sell after signing Jan Paul van Hecke and compatriot free agnet Marcos Senesi, but it looks like Spurs may even be lucky to get 40 million euros out of Romero; his wage demands certainly are not helping.
