How things shaped up

This midweek, there has been a full midweek slate of EFL games - all three of the Championship, League One, and League Two have had games - including a few Tottenham Hotspur loanees. Let's see how those in League One action got on tonight.

For the second game in a row, Matthew Craig was named amongst the substitutes by manager Darrell Clarke, who again opted for Jon Russell at the base of his midfield, as they hosted Charlton Athletic.

For the second game in a row, Matthew Craig was named amongst the substitutes by manager Darrell Clarke, who again opted for Jon Russell at the base of his midfield, as they hosted Charlton Athletic.

Davis Keillor-Dunn gave Barnsley the lead after 34 minutes, and until Craig was introduced after 63 minutes, it was the only goal of the game up till that point.

However, there would be incredible drama to follow. Luke Berry, who started against Spurs in the Premier League last season, equalised for the visitors after 77 minutes. He was not done there, adding his and Charlton’s second goal of the game three minutes into stoppage time, as he looked to ensure the three points would be heading back down to South London.

Incredibly, they were not. Two minutes later, in the final minute of stoppage time, Max Watters scored for Barnsley to make it 2-2 and make sure they would be coming away from the game with something after all.

This draw leaves Barnsley 8th in the league, with 19 points from their 12 games so far. There are teams immediately below them with games in hand, that would go above them if they were to win those games.

Down South,  Josh Keeley made it back to back in starts in League One for Leyton Orient, as they hosted Rotherham United, having previously not made a single league appearance. Jamie Donley, on the other hand, was the loanee sacrificed from the match day squad.

The young goalkeeper marked the occasion with a clean sheet and a win, the perfect evening against a side that were in the Championship last season. Keeley made two saves and a high claim to play his part in an impressive defensive display.

Due to their poor form prior to this game, the O’s remain in 20th, but are much closer to the pack they are chasing. They were five points off 18th place at one point, and are now five points off 15th place. Other than Donley not being in the squad – the perfect night all round.

As for the weekends, both loanees sides can do the other side a favour. Barnsley travel to 22nd place Shrewsbury, who are just three points below Orient, whilst Richie Wellens’ side will visit Wycombe, who are currently four points above Barnsley, as they occupy 3rd spot.

Side note: There will be no League Two round up, as George Abbott was not in the Notts County matchday squad with a minor injury. They drew 1-1 and move to third in League Two.
