Spurs loan watch: Championship round up
By Tom Vinall
On Tuesday night, a number of Spurs loanees were in action, all across the English Football League — including two players in the Championship.
Dane Scarlett was rewarded for his equaliser against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, with his first league start of the season in their home game against Derby County.
He would repay this form once more, scoring his second goal in as many games (three including England U21s) after just 12 minutes; to give Oxford the lead. Des Buckingham's side worked an attack down the left hand side, as Idris El Mizouni fizzed in a ball, which Scarlett attacked like an experienced centre-forward, as he caressed the ball into the far corner with a well taken finish.
It would keep them ahead for a while, but Derby would equalise ten minutes into the second half. Around seven minutes or so later, Scarlett was withdrawn for Mark Harris, who had been keeping the young Spurs striker out of the team in the league up until tonight.
That would be the final goal of the game, as it finished 1-1. This keeps Oxford's unbeaten run at home going, though this is most certainly one of the more frustrating results they have had this season. This result keeps them in 10th place, with 14 points from 11 games, though there are sides in action tomorrow night who could leapfrog them.
Elsewhere in the same division, Ashley Phillips was once again named on the bench, with Michael Rose and Ben Gibson preferred in central defence - as Stoke City hosted Bristol City.
The football cliché "a game of two halves" was very applicable for this game. Stoke would go into the break 2-0 up, but two goals in three early second half minutes were enough for Bristol City to earn themselves a share of the spoils. Phillips remainded on the bench, meaning his last Championship minutes were in August. It feels like him and Scarlett cannot have a productive time simultaneously.
This point for Stoke puts them 15th in the Championship table, though like Oxford, there are teams close to them in the league that will be playing tomorrow night, and they could end the gameweek in 18th place, just three points above the bottom three.
Next up for Oxford is the long trip to Sunderland on Saturday, whilst Stoke travel to South Yorkshire to play Sheffield United on the same day. Kick off for both games are 15:00 BST.
