Although the smoke around a potential Lucas Bergvall exit from Tottenham Hotspur this summer transfer window has leveled off, the threat of the Swedish international leaving Spurs has not dissipated at all, and Spurs have to legitimately worry about the 20 year old gem walking away after submitting a transfer request during the World Cup.
Bergvall is one of the best young prospects on the team, and even though he is coming off a, quite frankly (no pun intended) poor season, he is still regarded as one of the best up and coming midfield prospects in world football. And that's why clubs like Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and others in England are very interested in prying him away from Spurs.
While Bergvall is upset about a perceived lack of playing time this season following the much needed blockbuster signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, who both walk into this Spurs starting XI over Bergvall (among others), Roberto De Zerbi is trying to sell Bergvall on the fact that he will be important and get minutes.
Tottenham need to maintain quality depth
Because anyone who has followed Spurs with even a cursory interest over the last couple of years knows just how badly the club is hurting on the injury front. So many key players have gone down with serious injuries or nagging issues they just can't get back from, and that is especially true for the midfielders. Just in the last two seasons, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, and Xavi Simons all suffered serious knee injuries while Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, and even Lucas Bergvall himself missed significant chunks of time with various injury woes.
Tottenham Hotspur selling Bergvall would be a massive mistake, because they would be losing their best backup No. 8 and someone vital to the team if something were to happen to either Sandro Tonali or Mateus Fernandes this season. Because there will be starts out there for Bergvall, even when those guys are healthy, to rest the starters and provide a different flavor of profile for defenses to worry about.
Spurs fans for years have been talking about how the club needs to have more quality depth, and even though he is more of a player for the future than a stabilizing veteran presence off the bench, Bergvall is still 100 percent a player who qualifies as quality depth. And Spurs are not in a position where they can afford to lose that.
