Lucas Bergvall has become a frustrating story for Tottenham Hotspur this summer transfer window. Having already lost their biggest defensive gem in Luka Vuskovic to Brighton because Vuskovic didn't want to go out on loan again and compete with Jan Paul van Hecke in the near future, Bergvall submitted a transfer request during his disappointing World Cup campaign with Sweden because he didn't want to compete for minutes with incoming signings Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali - who were not even confirmed at the time Bergvall asked to leave.
Tottenham and manager Roberto De Zerbi are still trying to convince Johan Lange's best signing of his otherwise disappointing tenure as sporting director/chief scout of Spurs to stay at the club, and they definitely do not want him to go to Evangelos Marinakis's Nottingham Forest, who appear to be in the driver's seat for Bergvall after selling him as their next Elliot Anderson superstar breakout.
At the crux of the issue is Bergvall not believing in the minutes he will get at Tottenham and wanting to play every single game, even though he hasn't been good enough to start for a Big Six club like Spurs yet. Spurs needed to sign two sure fire stars in Tonali and Fernandes, and the message from De Zerbi is simple: compete or get out. De Zerbi has made it clear that he wants Bergvall to stay, but if Bergvall thinks Tottenham aren't big enough and he wants to play somewhere else to be a stepping stone, then he can go.
Conor Gallagher has the right mentality
Conor Gallagher just signed with Tottenham Hotspur in the winter transfer window for 40 million euros, and while he was important in the relegation fight under Roberto De Zerbi, he, too, has naturally lost his gig as a starter to two superior players in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.
But true to his reputation as a great locker room guy, Gallagher isn't at all upset about it and understands that a big club like Tottenham needs competition. He told reporters ahead of his reunion against Chelsea in the preseason friendlies, via Football.London's Alasdair Gold, “When you play for a club like Tottenham, if there's not competition for a starting XI spot then something is wrong. Obviously that's what comes in playing for such a top club. All the new signings are great lads, like I said. It's been great so far.”
Tottenham need players who are buying in and want to be at the club, and De Zerbi will have nothing less than that. he wants players like Conor Gallagher who have the right attitude, want to help Spurs grow as a club and win, and are more focused on the team than themselves. If Lucas Bergvall does not understand that and does not have the competitor's mentality, then he may be a lost cause; talent alone is not enough in football.
