Tottenham Hotspur left winger Maths Tel is only 21 year sold, and so far this summer, he has been the best overall player in the preseason friendly matches. Tel has been the main attacking spark, creating chances out of nowhere and scoring a beautiful free kick to show off his technical quality and potential in terms of scoring goals.
This summer, Spurs have done a great job of rebuilding their midfield and defense, even with Cristian Romero's departure to Inter Milan or Atletico Madrid, but now they have to focus on upgrading an attack that was one of the worst in the Premier League last season.
Spurs have been linked to Manchester City's Savinho and Omar Marmoush again this summer, while Cody Gakpo of Liverpool appears to be an option highly favored by head coach Roberto De Zerbi. Tottenham need to sign at least one new striker and one new winger, but maybe, just maybe, they can focus all their resources in signing just one great player in each position instead of splitting their money around three to sign two wingers.
Mathys Tel is important to Tottenham
And that's because Mathys Tel is playing well enough right now, building off last season's underrated performances, to show that he can be part of the picture as a No. 2 left wing option behind a more established star like, say, Marmoush.
Even Roberto De Zerbi has been praising Tel highly again this summer, "One season more experience, he has big, big talent, an important player. We have the responsibility to help him improve every day."
There's a lot to be gleaned about how Tottenham Hotspur view Tel from that quote. He is a "big, big talent" and is already "important" to Spurs and the club have a "responsibility to help him". That goes in line with Spurs not only being high on Tel in the future but also believing that he can help the team in the present, and if they believe he has world class potential and is already good enough to play, then that would fall in line with Tottenham being prepared to play him more this season.
Perhaps Tel could be a loan candidate if Spurs want him to get playing time, but, again, if he is already important to the team now, then that doesn't fit. What does fit is Spurs holding onto Tel, playing him frequently this season, and signing a new left winger for him to compete with but still get minutes behind that player.
