When Tottenham Hotspur hit rock bottom before Roberto De Zerbi came in to save the day, the only two players on the team trying to pull the Lilywhites up in the relegation fight were two young players, Mathys Tel and Archie Gray, who were showing the courage and quality that a lot of the veteran players who had given up on the badge were not showing.
Although Tel is far from the finished product and still has a lot of work to do to find consistency and chance creation as a winger, his athleticism and desire to get into scoring positions and work for the team are incredible and game changers for Spurs. Everyone is rooting for the former Bayern Munich and Stade de Reims forward to succeed at N17, and, in moments, he looks like the clear second best forward this club has after Mohammed Kudus.
Tottenham have been showing interest in a couple of top left wingers this summer transfer window, and while Roberto De Zerbi is strongly implying signing two players at the position when he talks to the press, Tel gave him a reason to reconsider and potentially only go after one.
Mathys Tel can complicate the summer plans
Yes, it was only against Auckland FC, but Mathys Tel was so electrifying in that game off the bench, creating a goal for Richarlison and nearly scoring another for Tottenham Hotspur in the 2-0 win. Tel was taking defenders on, getting into great positions, and progressing play off the dribble on the left flank in a way that nobody else at the club can currently do.
From Day One, Tel has been fully COYS, and he has been showing real sign of quality. Roberto De Zerbi could not use him a lot in the relegation fight, like Archie Gray, beause he wanted to start the veterans. But Tel was so superior that even De Zerbi had to start him.
Tel has more maturity than some people want to admit, and there is a real chance that using Tel is better than overpaying for a player like Cody Gakpo, for example, who also could not get the job done for a top Premier League club like Liverpool. Tottenham could go all out for a real premium option, stick with Tel as the No. 2, and show both Gray and Tel trust in games that are maybe not as high stakes as one deciding the top five Premier League places.
