Tottenham Hotspur supporters were beyond frustrated when they learned that star center midfielder Lucas Bergvall submitted a transfer request during the 2026 World Cup with Sweden even before the Lilywhites had officially brought in the talented - and expensive - midfield duo of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to vastly upgrade one of the Premier League's worst midfields.
Bergvall's transfer request, which came not long after Luka Vuskovic threw in the towel on Spurs entirely instead of agreeing to a new loan deal, felt like a slap in the face, and things only got worse when Nottingham Forest started to push extremely hard for the young midifelder's signature as an Elliot Anderson replacement.
In the many weeks since Bergvall's unrest began, there has been zero transfer movement. Tottenham did not bow down to lowball tranfer offers from Forest, Newcastle, and other clubs, and Bergvall remains a player Roberto De Zerbi and the club are trying to keep, even though the new Italian manager also made it clear to his 20 year old jewel that he will never stand in the way of a player who does not want to be here - a point he proved recently with the sales of Djed Spence and Cristian Romero to European giants Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid, respectively.
Lucas Bergvall looks like he's staying put
All is quiet on the Lucas Bergvall front these days as Tottenham Hotspur get closer to the opening 2026/27 Premier League season clash against local rivals Brentford, and it honestly seems like De Zerbi has successfully been able to convince Bergvall to stay and fight for his place with a role that will still be important, even if it is on the bench behind Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali (and presumably Archie Gray and Rodrigo Bentancur, at least for now).
It was Alasdair Gold of Football.London who recently reported that things may be potentially smoothing over between Bergvall and Spurs. Bergvall's camp is pleased with Roberto De Zerbi and the fact that he has been given significant minutes this preseason, and while they know that probably will not continue to be the case in the actual 2026/27 Premier League season, they appreciate what De Zerbi is doing. And like many players, it sounds as though Bergvall is a big fan of the manager, too.
De Zerbi has a lot of charisma. He is the reason why new stars Jan Paul van Hecke, Tonali, and Fernandes are coming to the club and why stars like Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven have stayed to sign contract extensions instead of requesting transfers of their own. It looks like De Zerbi has waved his magic wand and stopped the Bergvall drama from unfolding, though confirmation of his success can only be known and celebrated after the summer transfer window officially ends.
