Real Madrid transfer makes no sense for Tottenham despite golden opportunity

Tottenham are on a mission to improve the whole of their squad this summer, but they must be careful not to overstock key areas. Roberto De Zerbi wants to overhaul his squad after securing safety on the final day of the season, and it feels like a wise move after two dreadful seasons on the bounce for the club.

De Zerbi demanded big money to spend before agreeing to the role, and to the club's credit, they are now delivering on that promise. Jan Paul van Hecke has already been signed on a statement deal, and that followed the free signings of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson.

Meanwhile, the search for a holding midfielder is in full swing, and we have already seen a Spurs bid worth £75million rejected by Newcastle United for Sandro Tonali. Mateus Fernandes has also been linked.

When the midfielder search concludes, Tottenham's transfer business will go on, but they must be careful amid an apparent opportunity to sign one player.

Spurs do not need Paz

Reports have emerged suggesting Tottenham will get the opportunity to land Como star Nico Paz this summer. Real Madrid have the option to buy back Paz for just over £8million, and they are likely to do just that.

The attacking midfielder will then likely be sold for over £50million, but the catch is that it will likely be in January due to a reported 12-week block clause in the deal that would prevent an instant sale this summer. That clause was inserted to stop Como effectively being exploited by Real Madrid, who could have otherwise signed Paz just to sell him.

Instead, Los Blancos would now likely have to do a loan-to-buy deal with another club, although that still seems like a very logical scenario for a player who is in demand this summer.

The 21-year-old is a very talented player, let's get that straight. He scored 13 and assisted eight to help Como to European qualification during the season just gone, and he was deserving of a place on Argentina's World Cup squad.

But of all the positions Tottenham need to strengthen this summer, the number 10 role is not one of them. James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall and Xavi Simons - when back to fitness - all offer depth and talent aplenty in that position.

If that's not enough, Conor Gallagher has played further forward in that type of role in the past, and a number of the wingers can also fill in there.

Spurs have too much to do this summer to add a player to a position that already has depth, and that they have recently invested in with Simons, who will feel like a new signing when he returns to fitness later in the year. This is one Tottenham must dodge.
