Sandro Tonali has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur recently. He is precisely the type of player that Roberto De Zerbi will hope can help Spurs stay well clear of the relegation zone. Tottenham nearly went down last season, but De Zerbi is looking to get the club back to where they belong.

  • Defensive-midfiled: Sando Tonali

It was a real coup when Newcastle United signed Tonali from AC Milan back in 2023. He has been a great servant for the Magpies, barring his 10-month ban for breaching Italian betting regulations.

He helped the Magpies end their 70-year trophy drought as they lifted the EFL Cup. Spurs ended their own 17-year trophy drought when they won the Europa League the season before last. Tonali will be hoping for more silverware if he joins Spurs.

Tremendous success was expected when Tonali signed for Newcastle. However, the Premier League's profitability and sustainability regulations meant that their Saudi Arabian owners could not spend as much as they would have liked on their roster.

Tonali is a defensive midfielder who can also play in more advanced roles. He could slot in nicely alongside Joao Palhinha.

  • Defensive-midfield: Joao Palhinha

Palhinha was one of Tottenham's best players last season. He was on loan at the club from Bayern Munich, but Spurs could buy him permanently. He would be the more disciplined defensive midfielder, which would allow Tonali to get forward.

  • Attacking-midfield: James Maddison

James Maddison missed almost the entirety of last season with a cruciate ligament tear. However, he looked lively when featuring in Spurs' final three Premier League games of the season. He will need time to get his sharpness back. This could mean that Conor Gallagher starts ahead of him initially.

Gallagher looked promising playing in a more advanced role last season. He scored a crucial goal against Aston Villa.

  • Right-midfield: Djed Spence

Djed Spence played right midfield for Spurs in their final home game of last season. He is predominantly a left-back, but is right-footed. Also, Tottenham has just signed Andy Robertson, which would limit his game time at full-back. Therefore, playing right midfield could be a good fit for Spence, especially with his pace.

  • Left-midfield: MathysTel

Spurs have been linked with Savinha of Manchester City recently. However, De Zerbi appears to rate Mathys Tel. The young Frenchman has huge potential.
