For what feels like a lifetime, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is entering the final year of his Stamford Bridge contract. Given that Ange Postecoglou is wanting to strengthen the team for the 2024/25 Premier League season, it should come as no surprise that he is targeting one of the best English players currently.

However, there has been a disappointing update on the situation, as far as Tottenham fans are concerned. According to a report by HITC, Conor Gallgaher wants to stay at Chelsea as things stand and should anything change, he will inform Chelsea but at this point in time, Gallagher does not see it best for his career if he moves away.

No matter which angle you view this news, it is not good for Tottenham Hotspur. They have essentially spent the entire buildup to the transfer window eyeing one player, only for him to potentially make himself untouchable. After all, in the words of the article, Conor Gallagher "won't be forced out of [Chelsea] this summer."

So, Tottenham must now look elsewhere for their advanced midfield target. It is a position which needs strengthening from Ange Postecoglou's perspective. It is also the position of the most discontent, with players linked with moves AWAY from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Conor Gallagher would have been a great signing and he still could be at some point in the future. However, for as long as he sees his future at Chelsea, Tottenham must look elsewhere. After all, they cannot commit valuable time and resources to a player who does not even wish to join; it is not a good look or a good use of resources.

Conor Gallagher is currently representing England at EURO 2024. It remains to be seen the role this has in convincing his future either way. However, Tottenham fans should not hold hope.
