Pedro Porro receives overdue international call up
By Tom Vinall
Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro has been called up to the Spain national team by Luis De La Fuente, for the first time since March of this year.
Porro had a good campaign for Spurs last season, but was not selected for Spain's successful European Championships. He has a fantastic start to this season, with both the eye test and the numbers backing this up. He would have felt aggrieved not to have been called up for their previous squad in September, but has managed to persuade De La Fuente this time around.
The Spurs right-back has been called up ahead of nations league games at home to Denmark and Serbia over the break, with the side currently second in their group, two points below the aforementioned Denmark, with four points from their opening two games.
This call up is despite De La Fuente choosing two other right-backs, in Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal, and Celta Vigo's Oscar Mingueza, though perhaps on this occasion, the versatile Mingueza has been selected as a central defender.
The 25-year old only has three national team caps to his name, with the most recent coming in a defeat to Colombia in London back in March. Whilst Carvajal is likely to start at least one game, there is potential for De La Fuente to alternate and give Porro the nod in the other game. This call up feels like the minimum reward for Porro's excellent form with Spurs, and another cap (or two) would not feel generous by any means.
Porro was congratulated by James Maddison on Instagram, with the right-back replying with a positive message, telling him that his time will come, after the midfielder was once again left out of the England squad for their nations league games against Greece and Finland next week.
Well deserved, and let's hope Porro can make it the perfect week with a win for Spurs on Sunday.
