Pedro Porro's birthday: A look on his time at Tottenham so far
By Tom Vinall
Today, the 13th of September, is Pedro Porro's 25th birthday. To mark the occassion, let's take a look at how his Tottenham Hotspur career has gone so far.
Porro joined Spurs late on in the January 2023 transfer window from Sporting CP, initially on loan until the end of the season, but with an obligation to make the deal permanent that summer for the best part of £35 million pounds.
The Spaniard was signed by Antonio Conte, with the idea of being the perfect right-wing back in his 343 setup. Porro had been playing as a wing-back in Portugal for Sporting and it seemed like a perfect fit.
On his birthday, a look at how Pedro Porro has done so far
It was a tough start to life in N17 for the defender. He suffered a torrid debut away to Leicester City on his debut, which in his defence was an awful performance all around. He was then an unused substitute for the next two games, before playing one minute in the win over Chelsea and starting the next two games - defeats to Sheffield United and Wolves.
Things started to get better, with an assist against Nottingham Forest and a goal against Southampton. A poor international break with Spain seemed to knock his confidence back further, and then the manager he had been brought in for to play in a three-at-the-back setup - got sacked. Soon came the infamous battering against Newcastle, where Porro played in a back four for Spurs for the very first time, along with natural winger Ivan Perisic at left-back.
That seemed to have been somewhat of a turning point for Porro, who scored in the comeback draw with Manchester United a week later, before providing an assist against Crystal Palace and then a goal plus assist in the final-day win at Leeds United.
Porro was the topic of discussion that summer, as Spurs appointed Ange Postecoglu, who was known for using inverted full-backs, something a lot different from the wing-back system under Conte. There was a lot of talk about whether or not he could play in an Ange Postecoglu system.
Ange himself may have had some doubt, as he opted to start Emerson Royal on the opening day of the season against Brentford. Despite Emerson scoring that game, Porro came in to start the next week, and never really came out, starting 35 games during the 23/24 Premier League season.
The now 25-year-old scored three goals, provided seven assists, and created 13 big chances in the league last season, as he adapted superbly to the new role he was tasked with under Ange - being praised by several people for his tactical versatility on the pitch. It was a very good individual season, though sadly ended in heartbreak - as he missed out on a spot in Spain's successful European Championship squad.
In any case, Porro has become a huge fan favourite during his time at Spurs and everyone seems to be very happy with his role in the team. He has had a positive start to this season and grabbed another goal in the draw at Leicester City on the opening weekend. Unfortunately, he was once again snubbed for international duty but comes into the restart of club football fully fresh and with no knocks or injuries.
