Tottenham defender snubbed for international duty
By Tom Vinall
Pedro Porro has once again been omitted for international duty, having been left out of Luis De La Fuente's squad for September's Nations League games against Serbia and Switzerland.
Porro was picked in De La Fuente's first squad as manager in March of 2023, but had a poor game against Scotland, and had to wait a year for his next call-up, playing against Colombia in a friendly in March of this year.
However, the Spurs right-back then was not included in Spain's squad for the European championships, missing out on a winning medal, with De La Fuente preferring the seniority of 38-year-old Jesus Navas. The veteran retired in the immediate aftermath of the final, but De La Fuente has gone with Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza to back up Dani Carvajal.

Porro can feel quite aggrieved considering his consistent form and performances, especially with Jesus Navas no longer in the picture. Oscar Mingueza is a solid player, but not in the same class as someone as good as Porro. That too, the Celta Vigo man is a centre-back by trade, who has been filling in as a right-back.
It is hard to argue with De La Fuente too much considering he has just delivered a European Championship, but this decision does feel particularly harsh, and you hope it doesn't knock Porro's confidence. Let's hope he uses the frustration positively and strives to become an even better player than he already is.
From a selfish point of view, like with James Maddison missing out on England's selection, it is quite a good thing. Porro is an important player to Spurs, who will start any game of significance if he is available. Plus. the extra games this season compared to last season, Porro will be playing a lot of games this season, so the extra rest is welcomed by everyone at Spurs. Other than Porro himself.
