On this day in 2020, Tottenham Hotspur pulled off one of their most iconic victories in the modern era when they battered Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford. It is one thing to win 3-0, like in 2018 and 2024, but to win 6-1 at Old Trafford is just unheard of.

On this day: Famous Tottenham Hotspur win against Manchester United

Spurs were managed by Jose Mourinho at the time, with the Portuguese manager opting for a lineup of; Lloris, Aurier, Sanchez, Dier, Reguilon; Sissoko, Ndombele; Lamela, Kane, Son.

Funnily enough, Spurs did go behind, with Sanchez conceding a penalty after around a minute, which was routinely dispatched by Bruno Fernandes. However, after just four minutes the scores were level. A complete defensive mix-up at the back, where Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw seemed to tackle each other, allowed Ndombele to drift in and score via a deflection.

Incredibly, after seven minutes of play, Spurs were ahead in a game they had gone behind in. Kane was fouled a little into the United half, and with quick thinking played Son in behind, whose dinked strike nestled into the corner despite taking an age to do so.

After 28 minutes, Anthony Martial was sent off for an off-the-ball moment involving Lamela. Two minutes later, another United defensive mix-up, when playing out from the back allowed Son to return the favour, squaring the ball for Kane to tap home.

Mourinho's side were still not done, in the first half, however, as an Aurier cross from the right took a slight deflection towards the near post and Son nipped in to just poke the ball inside that near post and past David De Gea.

Despite a heavy fixture schedule, being three goals and one man up, Spurs showed no mercy. A lovely slick passing move resulted in a first-time through ball from Højbjerg finding Aurier in behind, who drilled the ball into the far corner to make it 5-1.

Finally, a little over ten minutes from time, substitute Davies was caught by Paul Pogba inside the United area and Kane expertly dispatched the penalty to make it a 6-1 and round off a famous victory for Spurs.

Son, Davies, and Reguilon (just about) are the only three players in the matchday squad that day, who are still employed by the club today.

Whilst the Jose Mourinho era was not a success, this was certainly a very high point of his tenure. Perhaps the highest.
