According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur's forgotten midfielder Giovani Lo Celso could now have the green light to finally depart the club in the final days of the summer transfer window.

It looks like a move back to where Spurs signed the midfielder back in 2019, Real Betis, is likely to be Lo Celso's next destination. Fabrizio reports that Betis attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir is on his way to join the Qatari Stars League, pathing the way for Lo Celso to rejoin the club he left five years ago.

Ironically enough, it was Fekir who replaced Lo Celso in 2019, just before the Argentine midfielder joined the club. Five years on, the tables have been turned. Sometimes life comes full circle.

Negotiations can finally begin for unwanted Tottenham player to leave

It feels like Lo Celso has been linked to every club under the sun this summer, but most notably Betis, his former club, Aston Villa, coached by his former Villarreal and Paris Saint Germain manager Unai Emery, and Fenerbahce, coached by his former Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho.

But it looks like a return to Betis seems the most likely at this stage of the window. 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall is well above Lo Celso in the pecking order, never mind the likes of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, so the writing has been on the wall for the 28-year-old for a while now, even though he continues to train with the rest of the first team.

It hasn't worked out for Lo Celso in North London, for a magnitude of reasons, but the issue was never talent, as we saw in glimpses at Spurs, and for the Argentina national team. I'm sure no Spurs fan will wish ill of him and he will go to Betis with everyone's well wishes. Sometimes it just doesn't work out - that's football.
