As Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi continues to search for his first attacking signing of the summer 2026 transfer window to transform an offense that was one of the worst in European football last season, Savinho's status treads water with Manchester City seemingly reluctant to give the full green light while the rumors linking Spurs to Cody Gakpo are ramping up.
Gakpo's name has been listed several times this summer transfer window by Fabrizio Romano and others as an alternative to Savinho or, maybe more likely, a different profile on the left wing that could be signed from another top Premier League club in conjunction with the former Girona man.
Now, the Liverpool forward is apparently a leading contender for a Tottenham transfer this summer while a figure of around 72 million pounds has been posited as the asking price the Reds will have for the 27 year old Dutch international.
Cody Gakpo is a second tier option
While Cody Gakpo is a notable name in European football and often has great big tournament performances for the Netherlands, he is also the same player Liverpool are trying to upgrade on. Gakpo became the main left winger after the Reds sold Luis Diaz following their Premier League title victory in 2024/25, and while Diaz had a phenomenal season for Bayern Munich, Gakpo was a huge liability for Liverpool with only 7 goals and 5 assists in 36 Premier League appearances.
While Gakpo isn't a bad player, he also is a forward in his prime with no future resale value, not much upside other than rebounding in a more fitting tactical role, no proven track record of being a true starter for a top Premier League club, and he's not going to be any cheaper than Savinho either.
Gakpo is going to cost 50 million pounds or so less than what Liverpool will spend on Bradley Barcola to replace him on the left wing, but there is a reason why the Reds want the younger, more explosive, and more goal scoring Barcola.
The interest in Gakpo from Tottenham Hotspur reeks of the old Daniel Levy strategy and less of the new Roberto De Zerbi mindset of going for the best possible player like Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Gakpo is a second tier option, which is why Liverpool do not want him as their own starter, and he is not a cheap option either; he is just cheaper than the actual premium players who would help a team compete for the Premier League title. Signing Gakpo would not be a disaster, necessarily, but it would be making an old mistake instead of forging the new path.
