Tottenham could be set to miss out on a player they reportedly see as the ideal replacement for Cristian Romero this summer. Romero is almost certain to leave the club ahead of next season, and that's whether or not Spurs manage to extend their Premier League stay.
Romero has called out the Tottenham board on a number of occasions, and coupled to his confessed determination to play in La Liga, there is little doubt that this summer will be the one that sees Romero depart., and Spurs are already said to have a replacement in mind in Marcos Senesi, but there could soon be fresh competition.
Marcos Senesi is likely to attract attention from Tottenham's rivals
Romero has been a fine servant for Spurs, always wearing his heart on his sleeve, and sometimes to his own detriment. But his talent means a big gap will be left in the Tottenham back line once he does depart.
According to reports, Spurs have tried to get ahead of that, with TalkSport reporting that there is already a deal in place with AFC Bournemouth star Marcos Senesi. The deal, which would be a free transfer, is said to be contingent on Tottenham staying in the Premier League, but given how poor Spurs have been this season, other teams may well come to the table to work on a new deal.
In fact, TalkSport pundit Alex Crook has told Chelsea to enter the race for Senesi, saying: "In terms of depth, I'm a little bit surprised that we're not showing more interest in Marcos Senesi down at Bournemouth.
"Available on a free transfer, proven in the Premier League... Chelsea had a look. Tottenham I think have got a pre-contract agreement [with Senesi] if they stay up. And just in terms of a body, I think that would be a useful acquisition."
Senesi could have plenty of options this summer, given he is a proven Premier League player available on a free transfer. His contract expires this summer, and he is not going to sign a new deal after Andoni Iraola confirmed his exit from the club this summer.
Spurs may well have gotten ahead of the deal, but due to being a fellow Premier League club, they cannot formally agree and sign a deal with Senesi, meaning any pre-agreement is only a gentleman's agreement at best.
That could open the door for others to hijack the deal, and it seems as though Senesi will be totally up for grabs if Roberto De Zerbi cannot steer Tottenham to safety.
