Barcelona are the latest club to reportedly express an interest in Tottenham star Cristian Romero, who may have played his last game for the club.

It's going to be a transitional summer for Spurs, and that's whether they secure Premier League safety or not. Whether it's just a scare or a relegation, this season has to serve as a wake-up call to the Tottenham board, and it likely will.

Whatever happens, Roberto De Zerbi will surely be given the chance to overhaul this squad, and to some degree, it may be enforced. That's because a handful of top players are likely to want out to go and compete with clubs who are at the top end of a league, and you can multiply the number of players in that category by two to three should relegation to the Championship occur.

Cristian Romero may finally have a destination away from Tottenham

As summer approaches, we have already seen a number of players linked with moves away from Tottenham Hotspur Way ahead of next season, and Romero leads the way when it comes to volume of rumours.

That should come as no surprise, given that Romero has regularly criticised the club chiefs, while he has also previously admitted that he would like to play in La Liga at some point.

Atletico Madrid are the usual team linked, but according to a fresh report from Sport in Spain, Barcelona are now tracking Romero, along with Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni.

Barca are set to revamp their back line this summer, with Chelsea's Marc Cucurella said to be high on their shortlist this summer. Romero could be another addition, and there is said to be a clause in the player's contract that makes a move easier.

The report claims Romero has a £51.9million release clause in is contract that comes into play when the bidder is either Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, owing to his desire to play in the top flight of Spanish football.

Spurs may find it difficult to convince Romero to stay if Barca do come in, and they are not even likely to get £51.9million if they are relegated, given there will be a need to sell due to wages.

One way or another, it looks likely Romero will leave the club this summer, and given his injury is going to keep him out until after the season has finished, it's likely the Argentine has played his last game for the club.
