As Roberto De Zerbi told fans before the game, there is no such thing as a friendly when two rivals like Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea take the pitch, and though Spurs went down to 10 men thanks to a red card to center back Kevin Danso, the Lilywhites were still able to prevail 2-1 in a statement making performance that featured a goal from new signing Sandro Tonali.
Here are the three biggest stars of the match for Spurs, as well as one player who didn't take advantage of the opportunity.
Star: CB Ben Davies
Quietly, Ben Davies has been one of the big winners of the preseason for Tottenham Hotspur, and he delivered a defensive monsterclass from the center back position, reminding fans that he is still one of the key leaders of the team and a quality piece of depth in central defense, even after a brutal injury earlier this year. He made so many great blocks and interceptions, probably saving a couple of goals from Chelsea's star attacking duo of Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.
Star: GK Antonin Kinsky
While Davies gives him a run for his money, Antonin Kinsky was the best player on the pitch for Tottenham Hotspur in the win, helping Spurs hold down the fort against 10 men. It has honestly become familiar territory for the young Czech keeper, who is proving why Tottenham backed him with a new contract instead of spending a huge sum of money on James Trafford.
Star: ST Richarlison
Richarlison came into the match in the second half for Dominic Solanke, and, in fairness, the starter on the day is coming off an injury, but it is telling that Richy made the difference with the late winner while Solanke had no impact. Yes, the goal was a tap in, but Tottenham need a striker who is in the right place at the right time. Richy was just that and had a great game overall, working his tail off, as always, despite not getting much service.
Flop: LB Andy Robertson
Andy Robertson was culpable for the goal Chelsea scored to quickly equalize Sandro Tonali's opener, and it was one of a couple of mental gaffes from the former Liverpool man. Perhaps he is shaking off the rust, but for a fullback who can't get forward as well these days, Tottenham signed Robbo largely for stability and his veteran presence.
