Boateng and Felliani not the right direction for Tottenham Hotspur

Recently a couple of transfer rumors were making the rounds on Twitter, neither of which makes sense for Tottenham Hotspur. Neither Marouane Fellaini nor Jerome Boateng are the answer for what ails Tottenham Hotspur and signing the veterans would be a step in the wrong direction for the Lilywhites.

Tottenham are Going to be in Rumors

Given the overall season, Tottenham Hotspur has had, where they mathematically are okay but visually are appalling we need to prepare for a lot of outlandish transfer rumors. On the one hand, Tottenham has hung around and if the ball bounces a bit differently here and there, Tottenham has a few more points and is comfortably in the top four race.

If you buy into the logic that Tottenham is close and only needs that something to get over the top on both ends of the pitch. Under this thinking, maybe Jerome Boateng and Marouane Fellaini make sense.

Alternatively, you likely already see an aging squad that has struggled to find cover for a possibly want-away star striker. Add to that picture a defense either too old, too young, or not talented enough, and help upfront and in the back are definitely needed. However, regardless of the help Tottenham need, Boateng and Fellaini are not the answer.

Tottenham need to find real cover for Kane

With Marouane Fellaini, we know he is a favorite of José Mourinho and provides that same large target to aim at as Fernando Llorente used to do. However, given how long Spurs have had Harry Kane as the primary striker and the inability to find any real cover, getting another stop-gap, band-aid in 33-year-old Fellaini just makes no sense.

Boateng still plays at a high level but

Jerome Boateng has been playing a lot for Bayern Munich this season and it shows. The 32-year-old has been a mainstay at Bayern for a decade having left Manchester City after the 2010-11 season. While Boateng still plays a lot and is effective he is a player in decline.

Boateng is down in every defensive category this season, from aerial wins to interceptions, to tackles, and clearances. Boateng is still a very competent passer but is even doing less of that for Bayern. Averaging the lowest number of key passes per match as he has since 2011-12 – his first in Germany, Boateng just is not what he once was.

Boateng and Fellaini not right for Tottenham

Tottenham is already one of the oldest teams in the league and has clearly shown signs of physical decline as the season has gone on. Just look at the second half against Manchester United.   Signing a 33-year-old, former striker who is mostly playing defensive midfielder in China does not seem like an answer, it seems like a prayer.

Likewise, while Boateng is a big name, his game is no longer at the level Tottenham needs week-in and week-out in the Premier League. Why would Boateng be any different than Toby who is not playing anyway? The answer is he would not be.

Tottenham Hotspur needs help up front and at center back but going to aging veterans because they are familiar, getable, or both is not the answer. Fellaini and Boateng are two where Tottenham simply needs to pass.
