Yet again Tottenham Hotspur claimed the lead only to see it slip away and drop another three points from a winning position. That is 18 points lost after taking a lead against their opponents, which would be enough for Spurs to be comfortably in the top four. Instead, fans are left once again wondering where the will to win is within a team that simply fades away from the big moments time after time.

No one stepped up from Spurs

On a day where Tottenham needed someone, anyone to step up and lead that never happened and the Lilywhites again laid a second half egg. Looking across the team, there really is not one player you can point to and say they had a good game.

A couple of players had a decent first half, like Giovani Lo Celso and Heung-Son Min. Lo Celso was a force in a solid Spurs press and Son had lots of space and scored the goal. However, the second half was a different story – or the same story on a different day – for Tottenham fans, as that effort and energy from the first half simply disappeared.

As Manchester United grew stronger in the second half, Tottenham Hotspur grew weaker and the pressure being applied in the first half was gone. Only Lucas Moura seemed to continue to want to press and pressure and he was taken off for Gareth Bale late. Only one of several moves undoubtedly to be questioned over the next week made by manager José Mourinho.

Regardless of what Mourinho did or did not do, Tottenham simply was not good enough from an effort, energy, or ability perspective and they paid for it conceding three second-half goals. Here are our player ratings from the loss that likely has sunk any top-four chances for Tottenham.
