Sandro Ramírez was a target last summer and in January for Tottenham. Since then, Spurs have shown little to no interest. Now that Sandro’s a free agent, perhaps he should be signed.

Mauricio Pochettino stated two weeks ago that he wanted his squad to be settled prior to Tottenham’s pre-season program beginning.

Well, today is the first official day of Spurs’ pre-season program with some players, not on international duty, reporting back to the team’s Enfield Training Center.

The only new addition to Pochettino’s squad is Victor Wanyama. That’s not a bad thing as the transfer window opens today, but a couple of players could have been signed by now: AZ Alkmaar’s Vincent Janssen and Roma’s Antonio Sanabria.

Of course both of those teams are taking their sweet time from allowing Tottenham to secure two strikers to help beef up their center-forward position.

If Spurs are desperate to sign someone as soon as possible, there is one option that’s currently available and that’s Sandro Ramírez formerly of Barcelona.

Shockingly enough, not much news has been reported on the 20-year-old forward after his contract expired today.

On May 24th, the Daily Mail reported that Barcelona had released Sandro (which could be a typo as that would have meant Sandro was a free agent for a month and one week).

What actually happened though, is Barcelona’s technical director Robert Fernández decided to let Sandro’s contract expire after the Spanish striker decided to remain with the club even though he could have left for more playing time.

"“Last summer Sandro had an offer to leave,” Fernández told Barça TV.“We evaluated at that time the situation we had as we could not sign players [due to a FIFA ban] and he made an effort to stay with us. We are very thankful for that.”“But there was a date, May 1, that we could have extended his contract another year, but after the way he has behaved, we believed it was better to open the door for him to explore other opportunities.”"

Now that the Spanish Under-21 international is a free agent, he could be signed for a small amount which would only see Tottenham paying his weekly wages.

The only question is, why are Tottenham not pursuing a striker who can play across the three forward lines and act like a winger to add more width as well?

More to the point, how come no one else is showing any interest?

At the age of 20, Sandro is the perfect age for teams to gamble on a young player and groom him to be a good super sub or just some rotational player during cup games while resting their star players (see: Harry Kane for example).

Perhaps Sandro Ramírez isn’t very good? His contract only expired because Barcelona saw him as surplus to requirements in one instance and Barça’s technical director was doing Sandro a favor.

Last season, Sandro only made 20 appearances in all competitions with 10 coming in La Liga and scoring three goals in one game during the Copa del Rey.

Two years ago during the 2014-15 season in La Liga 2, Sandro made 30 appearances and scored eight goals. Those are good numbers against weaker competition yes, but it shows that the Spanish striker could at least score.

Maybe the real reason why Sandro is no longer being pursued by Mauricio Pochettino and company is because of the aforementioned strikers, Vincent Janssen and Antonio Sanabria. But like what was stated earlier, AZ Alkmaar have currently blocked the sale of Janssen, most likely until the receive the full amount that they have asked for.

With regards to Roma, they’re currently deciding whether or not Sanabria should join Spurs. Seeing as how the Paraguayan’s agent, Raúl Verdú, has to talk with the Serie A club first to see if a move is even possible.

Currently, Tottenham’s situation when it comes to signing a backup and understudy — two strikers to really give Harry Kane enough rest and competition — has seen them come up short lately.

The final stages of negotiations always occur when Spurs place a value that they believe is fair in their view, only to see another team think otherwise and go higher than should be logical.

Vincent Janssen is close to joining Tottenham, Antonio Sanabria is nearly there. But Sandro Ramírez could be signed today with no complications from any other teams unless others are interested still, which there doesn’t seem to be any.
