Mario Kempes On Tour With Tottenham In 1984: Video
By Logan Holmes
Mario Kempes, the Argentina World Cup winning striker went on a Tottenham pre-season tour to Sweden and Norway in 1984. He played three matches for Spurs on the tour plus the two games I mentioned in yesterday’s article.
When I wrote yesterday’s article for Tottenham on this Day, 4th August, 1984, I thought that Mario Kempes had played only two games for Tottenham but it transpires that prior to the game against Enfield, he had played three games on tour and actually scored a hat-trick in the first game.
My thanks to Mario on the From the Lane messageboard who told me about Kempes’ goalscoring performance in the opening tour match against Stjordal Blink. Further research showed that the Argentine world Cup winning striker actually played in the other two tour game but without scoring.

Two days later Tottenham won 4 – 0 in Sweden against Ostersund and returned to Norway to round up the tour the following day with a 1 – 0 success against Viking FK.
Mario Kempes failed to score in either of those games and with two further scoreless games against Enfield and Nice, his time at Tottenham came to an end.
