Win marks end of a full Premier League season for Conte at Tottenham

Several significant numbers were associated with Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Everton, marking a full season for Antonio Conte at N17 as one of the biggest.

When Tottenham hosted Everton on Saturday, we knew it would be Harry Kane‘s 400th appearance for the club. However, a little less known was that the match marked the 38th Premier League game for Conte in charge at Spurs, completing a full EPL season.

Conte completes a year of matches for Tottenham Hotspur

Although he will not have a full calendar year until 2 November,  Conte has completed a full season’s worth of Premier League matches with the club. During those 38 games, Tottenham has 24 wins, seven draws, and seven defeats.

The 24 wins and draws equal 79 points or 2.08 points per match.

That total represents more points than Spurs finished last season, with Tottenham accumulating 71 points during the campaign. The 79 points would have placed Tottenham in third place, five points ahead of Chelsea.

Maybe more remarkable than the point total is the goal difference during Conte’s tenure, which has Tottenham at +48, having scored 82 goals and conceded 34 during these 38 games.

On 79 points, the Lilywhites would have finished 13 and 14 points behind Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively. Thus while Spurs would have finished comfortably in the top four under Conte last season, they would not have competed for the title.

Ultimately, Conte has stabilized a squad in decline and has them back on the ascendency.

Spurs continue to improve and are better this season than last

Maybe the football has not been as eye-catching to start the 2022/23 campaign as it was to end 2021/22 for Spurs, but Tottenham is gaining even more points.

Conte managed 28 games for Spurs in the League last season, with the team going 17-5-6, picking up 56 points – 2 per game – with a +36 goal difference, which is +1.28 per match.

Thus far in 2022/23, Spurs are a bit lower on goal difference per match, at just +1.2/game; however, with 23 points from 10 games, Spurs are earning a healthier 2.30 points per match.

At 2.3 points per game, Spurs would take home at least 87 points on the season, which would be six points short of City’s title-winning total from last season, more than halving the gap between Spurs and the top spot.

Yes, Tottenham is conceding more this season and has not quite hit their stride, but there is no doubt that Conte has this team moving in the right direction.

With one full season under his belt, we should expect to see Spurs improve even more as Conte coaches the club, hopefully to a place we have not been in a long, long time; the top.
