Tottenham Hotspur have become dangerously thin on the wings this winter, and things could actually get worse if left winger Mathys Tel, who is now the best player at the position for Spurs, makes good on his threat to leave the team out on loan this January due to Thomas Frank's dreadful mismanagement of him.
Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski are both injured on the right wing, forcing Wilson Odobert to shift from the left hand side to the right side of the attack. Like Tel, Odobert is a very talented young French winger with the potential to be special, yet Frank, too, has often held him back from shining this season.
Well, Odobert drew the start against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and he was by far and away the best player on the pitch in a 2-0 win. Odobert cooked Dortmund alive in many ways, registering two assists in a perfect winger's display as a creator and a progressor.
Wilson Odobert has star potential
Brave and taking on all comers, Odobert showed exactly why every Tottenham fan thinks he could one day be a star for this team. Odobert had four key passes and four dribbles completed in a tireless display, as the 21 year old dominated everyone on the Black and Yellows.
That is what Odobert is capable of, and with how well he played on the right wing, it looks like he can be a legitimate option on that flank going forward. Dortmund are a flawed team, but they have only lost once in the Bundesliga this season and are actually second in the table behind Bayern Munich.
So this was both a quality win for Tottenham Hotspur and a legitimate breakout performance by Wilson Odobert on a big European night with a lot on the line for Spurs due to all the pressure on manager Thomas Frank.
Odobert undoubtedly rose to the occasion. As Tottenham mull over a potential move for a right winger this January transfer window like Dortmund target Oscar Bobb over at Manchester City or Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche, Odobert made things a little bit more complicated with his breakout display on the right flank.
Because if this is what Odobert is capable of, Bobb certainly is not going to be a better option than the Spurs man, while Akliouche may not be worth the money for a couple of months when Odobert is capable of producing this in a big game.
