There have been quite a few major disappointments in the Tottenham Hotspur squad so far in the 2026/27 Premier League season, but no player has looked as out of sorts on the pitch than Dominic Solanke, who has not exactly been passing his tests with flying colors in the English top flight since joining Spurs in 2024.
What has made Solanke's struggles even more glaring to start this new Premier League campaign under Roberto De Zerbi, a coach who surprisingly believes in Solanke to a high degree, is the fact that the strikers Spurs moved on from have been playing so well. Troy Parrott is bagging winners for a top Spanish side in Real Betis, including sinking the mighty Real Madrid, but the real kicker has been what top young prospect Will Lankshear is doing in the second division.
Sure, it is only the EFL Championship, but Lankshear is making a lot of Tottenham fans regret the club's decision to sell the No. 9 to Middlesborough. Granted, Boro were offering the sort of money Spurs could not turn down for a player who was expected to only be third string behind Solanke and Richarlison, but with Richy not registered to the squad after a falling out with De Zerbi and Omar Marmoush looking more like a support striker or left winger than a true No. 9, there's a real sense that Lankshear could have helped this team.
Dominic Solanke looks like Spurs worst player right now
And looking at the fact that Dominic Solanke has not scored any goals or any assists in the Premier League this season while regularly looking like the club's worst player on the pitch due to his inability to get anywhere near scoring positions, Will Lankshear's numbers with Middlesborough are starting to look a lot more tantalizing to Spurs.
Lankshear has scored 6 goals in 8 games in the EFL Championship and 2 goals in 3 games in the League Cup. That's an incredible return for a 21 year old striker and impressive regardless of the competition he is facing. Lankshear has been one of the most clinical strikers in the country and is doing everything that Solanke is not for Spurs: he is finishing off his chances and, most importantly, showing great talent as an anchoring point in being in the right places at the right times.
Solanke's lack of success for the Spurs first team becomes all the more glaring when you look at the goals Lankshear is scoring and his production. It's hard not to wonder if he would legitimately be a better option than Big Dom right now.
