Tottenham Hotspur are reeling after a heavy defeat to Liverpool in the League Cup, and while many Spurs fans expected a loss to the Reds at Anfield, seeing the result itself was nonetheless disheartening.
Spurs went back to starting new Manchester City signing Omar Marmoush at striker with inverted wingers Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus flanking him, and while Marmoush was a more active danger than he was in the previous two 0-0 draws in the Premier League, that final bit of quality in the finish and even earlier in his touches was lacking.
But he was still a great deal better than the Tottenham starting striker over the weekend, Dominic Solanke. De Zerbi has always been a fan of Big Dom since coming in to Spurs, and he gave the England international a chance to prove his salt against Everton. But Solanke was the worst player on the pitch, failing to create chances or even get into the box to be available for scoring opportunities himself.
Dominic Solanke in theory is better than in practice
After the game and before Tottenham Hotspur faced Liverpool, Roberto De Zerbi made it clear that he still sees big things from Solanke in the future. De Zerbi said, via The Spurs Web, "Solanke is a good player. He needs to improve his physical condition and stay positive because he can score many goals with us. Marmoush and Savio were not the protagonist but that is different here."
Dominic Solanke has so much about him to like in the theoretical, but everything Tottenham fans have actually seen on the pitch points to him being a liability. Spurs are desperate to score goals, and while they were not necessarily better off without him against Liverpool, there are going to be very few Tottenham fans who want to see Solanke in the starting lineup next weekend vs. Aston Villa.
Omar Marmoush maintaining his job as the center forward makes the most sense after watching how badly Solanke played against Everton, but De Zerbi's own inkling towards Solanke can't be ignored. The manager himself thinks Solanke can score "many goals" for Tottenham this season, and if that is what he truly believes, then Spurs fans can expect more starts from Solanke before long, seeing as how Spurs are still struggling for goals without him. Tottenham fans had better hope Solanke can get fully fit and that fitness is the issue here, because someone needs to step up and find the back of the net now.
