Tottenham upgrading Guglielmo Vicario is starting to become a reality

It's not that crazy.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is far from the biggest problem at the N17, and he's actually one of the better keepers in the Premier League. He has a raw talent and can make some of the most difficult saves in the business, even single handedly keeping Spurs in games as he did in the Champions League this season vs. Monaco.

But Vicario has honestly cost Spurs more points in the table, simply by the nature of how unforgiving mistakes can be in goal. Even beyond mishandling or positional errors, Vicario has made mistakes that will not show up in stats he is among the leaders in like save percentage and post shot expected goals prevented. You know, mistakes like the absolute bungle job he pulled against Fulham to almost effectively doom Spurs to a loss to the Cottagers.

It is not easy to find clear upgrades on Vicario in goal, but if Spurs want to compete with Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool one day, then they will need a world class goalkeeper like them who they can 100 percent rely on to not lose them games. The only way they can find that goalkeeper is to get in the door early, and, courtesy of Man City signing one of those types of players in Gianluigi Donnarumma, Spurs could benefit by signing a superstar of the future in goal from the Citizens.

A Tottenham target is forcing his way out

According to a report from Jack Gaughan of the Daily Mail, James Trafford and Stefan Ortega are both open to leaving Manchester City as early as the upcoming January transfer window. Trafford feels as though he was sold a false promise as the new No. 1 at the Etihad, which was a plan that evaporated after Man City jumped on the opportunity to sign Champions League winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG.

Trafford was the most promising goalkeeper in England while at Burnley in the Championship, and he is just 23 years old. If there is even a prayer of Spurs signing him in January, they have to show significant interest, because he has the ability to be a world-class keeper on Donnarumma's level and single handedly win more than just one or two games for Spurs - and lose less of them than the older Vicario does.

Sometimes, it looks like a red flag when a player pushes out of a club, but Trafford's indignation is more than reasonable. He is wasting his career on the bench at Manchester City when he should be a top five goalkeeper in the Premier League and starting every week. Tottenham could give him that chance, as he is a better keeper than Vicario already, with all due respect to the decent Spurs shot stopper.
