Tottenham Hotspur fired Ange Postecoglou after winning the Europa League and replaced him with Thomas Frank, so if Spurs made that move believing fully that Frank can achieve more than Big Ange did, then that means they think their new coach can bring them a Premier League title one day.
At least, that's the kind of rhetoric chairman Daniel Levy implies when he says that he wants to win both the Premier League and Champions League, which is obviously the common, shared goal amongst Frank, the players, and the fans.
If that's what Levy plans on doing and if he thinks Frank is the guy to bring those titles to him, then he and ENIC have to put their money with their mouth is. So far in the transfer window, they haven't exactly done that, though they have shown signs of being serious.
For example, Tottenham did sign Mohammed Kudus for 55 million pounds from rivals West Ham and nearly signed Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest for 60 million pounds right afterwards. But just as well, you can fault them doubly as hard as you would have praised them for ultimately dropping the ball on MGW. On top of that, Tottenham failed to sign Bryan Mbeumo for Frank - his best player at Brentford.
Tottenham need a new playmaker badly
Tottenham, however, are pushing to make some big transfer before the window closes at the end of August amidst a serious attacking crisis between Son Heung-min's departure and a rash of key injuries. Spurs are already gunning for Manchester City winger Savinho, who could cost a mere 60 million pounds.
It's wild to think of a player as "only" being worth 60 million pounds in those terms, but top-class Premier League attacking starters tend to go for more. Kudus as high upside but isn't proven, and even he cost Tottenham 55 million pounds. Players like Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha went for around 70 million this summer to Manchester United.
Tottenham aren't just eyeing Savinho, though. They are circling back to an old transfer flame earlier this window whom they also backed out of to try and sign Gibbs-White, but now with Gibbs-White off the table and starting No. 10 James Maddison out for the foreseeable future with a torn ACL, Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze has become a big topic again.
According to a fresh report from Give Me Sport reporter Ben Jacobs, who has been money this transfer window, Tottenham are preparing a 60 million pound transfer for Eze. They are also talking with Palace about activating his 68 million pound release clause, which reportedly expires this Friday. Jacobs reports that Tottenham are considering meeting the clause, but it appears they are first discussing it to better understand when exactly the clause ends.
The difference between 60 million and 68 million pounds doesn't seem like much, but since Tottenham do like to pile up 5-10 million pound flier signings among young players around the world - such as Kota Takai this summer and Lucas Bergvall last season - every bit saved can go a long way.
Signing Eze for less than his release clause, like Tottenham did with Kudus, would be a huge signal of bargaining power and intent from Tottenham, particularly when you consider that these are two of the best attacking players in London and have yet to reach their prime.
Eze is fresh off winning the FA Cup for Crystal Palace, and there is no doubt that most Tottenham supporters would be elated to bring him in at any reasonable price. And while 60 million pound isn't exactly cheap for a player with limited resale value, it is absolutely reasonable.
