Tottenham star remains at risk of January exit over financial reasons, expert claims
Tottenham have endured a season full of ups and downs, once again highlighting the team's pressing need for consistency. Now, one of their key players might be at risk of leaving.
James Maddison’s time at Tottenham Hotspur has been a rollercoaster, with his future now a topic of speculation.
However, dissatisfaction over recent decisions by the club has raised concerns about his long-term stay.
Tottenham star remains at risk of January exit over financial reasons, expert claims
Despite rumours linking him with a possible January exit, it appears 'very unlikely' that the midfielder will leave North London this winter, according to Give Me Sport.
Having joined Spurs in a high-profile move, Maddison’s performances have been a mix of brilliance and inconsistency.
His stellar display against Manchester City, where he netted twice in a stunning 4-0 victory, was quickly overshadowed by a lacklustre showing in the 1-1 draw with Fulham. Questions about his ability to consistently perform at the top level are growing louder.
Dan Plumley, a football finance expert, highlighted that any decision regarding Maddison’s future would be heavily scrutinised, particularly from a financial standpoint.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Plumley explained the importance of evaluating the amortisation of Maddison’s transfer fee and his current book value.
Tottenham’s notoriously frugal chairman, Daniel Levy, will likely weigh the financial risks and benefits carefully before making a move.
“He is a high-profile player and again, we’ve seen Tottenham in the past not be afraid to make those hard decisions or to be hard negotiators with Daniel Levy’s style.
“There is still a risk attached to that given the profile of the player so it’s an important consideration and ultimately, it becomes mostly financial, certainly given the way the player is at the minute, but it will be a big decision for the board to make,” Plumley said.
Given Maddison’s recent performances, his contribution to the squad has come under scrutiny.
While his potential remains undeniable, inconsistent displays might force Tottenham to rethink their long-term plans for the midfielder.
Financial considerations take centre stage
For Tottenham, Maddison represents both a financial asset and a player who could shape the team’s future.
His spectacular return against Manchester City showed what he is capable of, but his subsequent struggles highlight the ongoing challenges.
Tottenham must now decide whether to fully back Maddison or consider alternatives. Selling him prematurely could spark backlash from fans, but keeping him without consistent performances might be equally risky.
With Spurs navigating this delicate situation, Maddison’s future could hinge on his ability to deliver consistently in the weeks ahead.
Now, Maddison remains a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans, but his performances on the pitch will ultimately determine whether he stays a Tottenham player for the long term.
