Tottenham Hotspur need to be adding talent, not losing it, this summer transfer window after nearly getting relegated last season from the Premier League. And so far, they have added three defenders, including 60 million euro transfer Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, and are in hot pursuit of top class Premier League midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

But as Spurs welcome Van Hecke and prepare to snag, hopefully, both Fernandes and Tonali, they are having to navigate the departure of their best defensive prospect, Luka Vuskovic, in response. Now, their second best midfield prospect, Lucas Bergvall, could be joining them.

Bergvall has submitted a transfer request to Tottenham after a difficult 2025/26 season in which he struggled with injuries and poor coaching from Thomas Frank, who often hung him out to dry in a No. 10 role that did not suit him. But even when Roberto De Zerbi came in, the new manager saw how badly Bergvall was struggling and went in a different direction, keeping him on the bench.

The young generation is failing themselves

That is probably why Bergvall is asking for a change in scenery, perhaps flattered by links to Premier League clubs like Chelsea and Aston Villa that have been more successful can Spurs in recent seasons.

For many Tottenham Hotspur fans, though, Bergvall's demand feels more like giving up than a reasonable request from a player lacking minutes. Because Frank is lone gone as Spurs manager. How can Lucas Bergvall be so sure that Roberto De Zerbi is not going to play him, especially if Bergvall manages to work hard and impress in the preseason and in the early going? It should surely be more than feasible for Bergvall to do just that.

And Bergvall has to be honest about a few harsh truths as he submits this transfer request to abandon Spurs at the age of 20 after just two seasons. Bergvall and others can blame Thomas Frank and the coaching, but Bergvall was quite poor on the pitch in his own right and debatably even the club's worst midfielder during stretches of the 2025/26 season.

Right now, instead of focusing 100 percent on the World Cup, Bergvall is submitting a transfer request at a time when the Swedish national team were totally embarrassed 5-1 by the Netherlands. And Bergvall is not even a regular starter or a key player for Sweden, showing his flaws in possession when he does play on the pitch.

Bergvall is a huge, huge talent who has shown the potential to be world class, and losing him would 100 percent be a blow Tottenham should want to prevent. But it is so weird that the young generation of players is willing to give up for the next big thing, give their agent a fat transfer commission, and bolt instead of being introspective on their own flaws and fighting for a spot.
